Topic: Quadrophenia Posted: June 01 2006 at 05:47 |

I haven't listened to 'Quadrophenia' for quite a long time and I got a real choc re-discovering it. It is a real Prog masterpice. After 'Tommy' and the second aborted concept of Townsend 'Lifehouse' (which gave way to 'Who's next'), 'Quadrophenia' released in 1973 is the third concept record with the highest composition level and the synth work (Townsend) and brass arrangements of Entwistle are excellent. A real pitty, that single records can't be added!

BTW : Both 'Quadrophenia' and 'The Lamb' deal in a wider sens with Schizophrenia, could be interesting to know, wether Gabriel was influenced by 'Quadrophenia' (apart from the typical British context).

It's a wonderful album indeed, as is "Tommy". I think PA should have a special section on influential (though strictly speaking not prog) bands such as The Who and Led Zeppelin.

Best Rock opera ever. Hands down. It's a very symphonic album full of lovely keyboards and such. Has Pete Townsend's best songwriting and guitar playing. In my views it's certainly a prog album, possibly the best prog related album ever. It's definetely in my list of top 10 favorite albums. If you haven't heard Quadrophenia, I pity you, it's an incredible album.

Sea & Sand is one of my favorite Who tracks ever (I'm wet & I'm cold, but thank God I ain't old...), as well as The Real Me & 5:15...Also liked the movie a lot, but not the soundtrack...The concept is great, taking schizophrenia & merging it with the band's 4 distinct personalities, then having the main character Jimmy "act out" those 4 personalities...
The movie was released in '79, with a young Sting playing the role of the bellboy/Ace Face (his first acting role I believe). It was based on a real clash between mods & rockers...

Let me add my glowing endorsement for Quadrophenia. Indeed Townshend's best work. The entire band shines on this one. The music flows nicely from song to song & tells a compellng story in the process.
Stop reading this & go get this CD, now. It's that good.

Well, it's redundant, but I love it too. It's been a favorite of mine for a very long time. I agree on specific albums being included. Could there be a special section? When you look at The Who's entire output, they are not a prog band. But, "Tommy," and "Quadrophenia" are definitely prog. Other bands have had shining prog moments as well. It's a shame that certain selections are omitted because the band doesn't truly fit the profile.

When I really need an album to rock out to that still gets me thinking
(usually on long bike rides), Quadrophenia always does the
trick....listening to the last four songs in sequence blows my mind
every time. I can't think of too many closers as good as "Love,
Reing O'er Me"...on par with Eclipse on DSOTM in my opinion!

One of the great albums of my youth...saw the tour in '74...wore out 2 vinyls.
Played it a bit too much so that I grew tired of it. Saw the tour
again in '96...hadn't heard it in many years...the concert rekindled my
love for it BIG TIME...went out and bought the remastered cd, and
haven't looked back. Magnificent! One of the all time greats.
