HONORABLE MENTION:
Kamelot
Ayreon
Symphony X
Fates Warning
Queensr˙che

RUNNERS UP:
Vanden Plas
Opeth
Pain of Salvation
Riverside

WINNER:
Dream Theater Embarrassed
Just can't beat 'em... quality with every release.  A polarizing band, to be sure, but worthy of all the praise they get.

Hey, this is a good poll! This genre's gotten deep! Besides the artists I listed above, I'm only familiar with Tool on this list... um... sorry Tool fans. I've been trying for a long time to get back into Tool, all to no avail... It's not that I don't like their stuff; it's just not quite my cup o' tea, I guess...

Hey Mike, what's your definition of "Post Metal"? Is this the stuff my goth friends listen to, or is it the stuff my emo friends listen to? Or...what?

Modern metal bores the hell out of me. But Tool and Opeth are great. They seem to have actual meaning behind their music, not to mention they are excellent bands who keep metal alive (especially in one amazing solo in Deliverance by Opeth, at 8:15-8:40 to be specific).
Dream Theater would be a decent band if they weren't so DAMN CONTRIVED.

Post Metal is similar to Post Rock. Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna ... and lately I've also been applying the term "Post" to many more genres. It essentially means that artists leave a certain genre behind ... you still hear traces of the genre in the music, and they're using the instruments that are typical for the genre, but there is much experimentation going on.

Well, then it would possible to call any innovative group listed on PA "Post-something". "Same instrumentation with more experimentation" is not a way to describe it. Many groups have copied Neurisican and they are not experimental in any way as their arrangements and structure are derived from Neurisican. On the other hand, you have groups like Sculptured, which inserted unusual instrumentation into the Metal scene together with a Melodic Death Metal sound, but nobody will call them Post-Metal because they don't sound like Neurisican groups.

Basically, Post-XYZ(remember? LOL)is a genre that is so poorly called when it comes to the description of its aeathetics that it should have been called something else. Much like Progressive Rock, Indie and... IDM.
