5 important jazz artists made important contributions
to progressive rock

1. Herbie Hancock - Headhunters (best selling jazz
CD in US)

2. Billy Cobham - Spectrum (Cobham, Bolin and
Hammer, nuff said)

3. Airto Moreira - The Other Side of This (worlds best
percussionist)

4. Joe Zawinul - Dialects (Bitches Brew composer
concocts Lunatic Broth)

5. Jean-Luc Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean (violin virtuoso
through Zappa filter), Very best of CD combines
other highpoints, but the residue is there

any other opionions out there?

Jan Hammer's got to be on the list, due to his collaborations with Beck, Johnson, Schon, etc.

I have that record, it rules!

anyway I'd have to say that many chick corea stuff as in return to forever's romantic warrior would be considered prog.

What a poor choice! There are definitely better Zawinul choices than dialects. For one thing, Dialects was recorded once Weather Report broke up in the mid-80s. Better choices would include his self-titled "Zawinul," his work on Cannonball Adderly's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" or something from the WR catalogue, such as "Mysterious Traveller" or "Heavy Weather"

Yeah, Enigmatic Ocean is a fantastic record. I also like Imaginary Voyage.

And lets not forget Inner Mounting Flame by the Mahaviushnu Orchestra!

Dude! Venusian Summer is incredible! Get it yesterday. Lenny's 3rd, Adventures Of Astral Pirates is not quite up to par (IMHO), but it's still first-rate 70's fusion.

AND...AND...something else everybody should pick up: the new remaster of Caldera's very first 1976 album. Imagine a mix of Santana, Weather Report, and Return To Forever!!! Phuqqin' fantastic piece of work. CDUniverse has one copy left, at the moment, but Laser's Edge has copies, too.

I liked Miles Davis - On the Corner

think his best is THE HOT SPOT Soundtrack
with John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, John Hammond
and Branford Marsalis with Jack Nitzsche producing,
not progressive, maybe regressive
