Genius? No. Sorry to be cynical but no one in rock or pop is a 'genius' IMO. Mozart was a genius.

Sorry to be cynical,Blacky?Confused

What you say is bizaare in the extreme! The sun is yellow so in my opinion a banana isnt???????

Maybe you're right and I'm wrong, but IMO, It comes down to how you define the word genius. I have been brought up to regard genius as something exceptional. Playing bass guitar and singing rock songs is not exceptional, however good the songs may be in your personal opinion. Writing piano concertos at the age of 7 is exceptional. That is genius, and there is nothing subjective about that. Even if you dont personally like the sound of a Mozart piano concerto you would be hard pressed to prove that that level of skill is NOT genius.

But again, it depends how one defines genius. Your definition differs from mine. Thats cool.

Lyrical crimes are not restricted to latter day PF, though......

Ironic - one of my favorite songs of all time contains one of my most detested lyrics........ pretentious, us?

Radio Kaos became the sound of summer back in '87 for me. He's a bit emotionally intense but other than that I can't fault the man really.

He used to drink at my local pub (The Plough in East Sheen - London) and even got the Landlord of the pub to appear on stage at Wembly Arena in a mock-up of the Pough's bar.

I must remind the right honourable gentleman that a monologue is not a decision.

depressing songs generally make better lyrics and music. I dislike happy songs. because life isnt a happy thing. depressing lyrics reflect life as it really is.

the one thing i dislike about early beatles and stuff like beach boys etc is that their lyrics and music was far too happy. they toned down a bit after sgt peppers. pink floyd know how it is. roger is a genius

I'm a Gilmour fan but can't deny Roger's skills as composer, singer and bass player.

Don't always agree with his negative perspective of life but the guy is honest and coherent, he's somebody I would love to discuss about politics.

I learned to like Waters stuff more after buying the DVD In The Flesh Live, almost a masterpiece.

You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.

I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used.
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise.
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this
maze?

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain.
Who was trained not to spit in the fan.
Who was told what to do by the man.
Who was broken by trained personnel.
Who was fitted with collar and chain.
Who was given a pat on the back.
Who was breaking away from the pack.
Who was only a stranger at home.
Who was ground down in the end.
Who was found dead on the phone.
Who was dragged down by the stone.

Now Decide If he's a genius

I love Pink Floyd and I have plenty of respect for Waters' talent.

Genius? If we only knew his IQ...according to MENSA, there's a lot of geniuses running around, including Geena Davis and some model who posed for Penthouse (and, as Clockwork Orange's little Alex liked to say, "your humble narrator"  who, unlike Waters, still hasn't managed to do anything very impressive with his life...). I'm sure Roger would welcome being recognized at the same level as Marilyn Vos Savant, an advice columnist so banal she makes "Dear Abby" seem gripping and poignant by comparison.

And going by music journalists, there's a heck of a lot of groundbreaking, visionary geniuses on MTV. I especially remember hearing Madonna being called a genius many times, and more recently Eminem, Alicia Keys, and (gasp) Mariah Carey (although that was probably only because she became famous after doing a ripoff of a song with the word 'genius' in the title. Music journalists tend to seize on that sort of thing).

Nah, forget these silly accolades. Roger has managed to write a lot of extremely meaningful music (as well as "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" ) and been a guiding member of a beloved, classic band. Calling him a genius just begs for odious comparisons.

In an earlier post I said that I didn't regard Waters as a genius. I think you have argued a similar case to mine, but put much better

Its true the term genius can be used so loosely, it loses its meaning after a while. As you say, there are those who regard Eminem as a genius for exactly the same reasons some of us think Roger Waters is a genius: Lyrics. So in that regard the issue is purely subjective. Other artists who you dont really asscociate with intelligence have surprisingly high IQ's. Madonna is supposed to have 'genius level IQ' officially.

I tend to regard genius as something incredibly exceptional. I used Mozart as an obvious example, and I'm sure there are other composers, artists etc who meet my unreasonably high criteria  I cant think of a pop or rock star that does, though. That doesn't mean I dont regard the likes of Waters as a very talented and skilled musician.

A person is either a genius or he is not.It is not subjective, we have man-made ways of measuring it.You cannot really speculate.

Some commentators muse that genius can be broken down into different criteria eg David  Beckham (good example because educationally he is most definitely not a genius) could be considered a genius because of the way he naturally uses the ball, mentally works out angles and possible outcomes and makes the correct choice more often than not to pass the ball almost inch-perfectly.This he does not just better than 99.9% of the population but also 99% of top class footballers. So genius? Why not.

The same could be applied to Roger Waters.

Artistry with a brush or a pen can be considered genius, but the artist himself might not necessarily be gifted in traditional disciplines eg mathematics or problem -solving.The ability to make the abstract tangible, to order thoughts through expression with paint or ink is in itself not genius but surely when you appear to do it far better than anyone else, genius must be present.

Ok.. I'll consider Roger Waters a genius if he really did construct DSOTM as a alternative soundtrak to the Wizard of Oz...

It's a bit like the word 'artist' that gets applied to anyone with a recording contract...I hate having to use the same word for both Renoir and Ashlee Simpson

but genreally I think of a genius as someone who is far beyond his contemporaries...Waters ranks at the top of the pack, most definitely, but still within the pack.

I could just about make a 'genius' argument for Zappa, though...
