Man On Fire - Undefined Design. Very Rush like, but slinky fretless bass sweetens the pot.

Also, The first Singularity album. Color of Space sounds like a lost mid 80's Rush release.

Tiles-even down to using Hugh Syme for a Hemispheres rip-off cover.

I've got the latest Tiles CD "Window Dressing", but it doesn't ring RUSH to me. Heavier then anything Rush has done. It does have a few good tracks and Matthew Parmenter (Discipline) plays violin on one track.

I wasn't "taken" with it, a bit too DT Metal for my old ears, however, now I'm curious to search out a RUSH link. I did hear that their last disc, Presence (or is it Presents) of Mind is more RUSH influenced.

Heard Vapor Trails yet?

I'm afraid Tiles (like most Rush-derivative bands) doesn't do a whole lot for me. The guitarist and bassist are really good, tho.

I detected a shift to the reggata de blanc style by Rush when the main proponents of the white reggae style split, i.e. Police. Rush added to this sub-genre and were definitely not copyists.

Dick

I agree. There were numerous songs by Rush that I felt had a 'police' feel or vice versa. 'Synchronicity 2' for one, where the guitar and drums in particular make me think of Rush. Stu Copeland seemed very 'click perfect' like Peart.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Saga/Triumph??? I have albums by both and they do exhibit a certain 'Rushness' in their sound.

Both Cannuck bands as well I think...

^ I was trying to think of Triumph. Good Call! I have "Just a Game" and it's probably the closest thing to 'classic' Rush that I can think of.

80s and beyond, they did adopt some of that Police "new wave reggae" sound (goes back to the Clash, right?) but made it their own. I got worried when rap started to pop up, but I think that was just a breif hiccup in the band's journey.

That's one of the reasons I still like Rush...there's many hard rock/ metal bands that you'd think might be similar, but there's nobody really comparable to them, in style or approach.

Yes, I do have Vapor Trails. It's heavy, but not in the same sense as Window Dressing. Mostly it has to do with the style of guitar amplification. Lifeson doesn't use a metal distortion patch on his effects. His is more about hard rock distortion, which adds a different flavor. I'm sure James would be more qualified to elaborate on the difference.

Vapor Trails sounds heavily distorted because of the poor mastering. The whole album is mastered too loud.

I have £2000 worth of HIFI and even it cant make any sense of it!

Coming from a longtime Rush fan:

Saga, Triumph and Zebra sound nothing like Rush (and I'm a fan of all four).

In fact, Triumph and Zebra have been around about as long as Rush, but Zebra didn't get a deal until '82 (first album in '83).

In terms of pure hard rock style (plus falsetto vocals, wailing lead guitarist/singer, etc.), Zebra is the "American Triumph." Or Triumph is the "Canadian Zebra."

Whatever.

Yes I confirm...+ a few others bands of the so called (pseudo) prog (symphonic) metal scene. The specialists of this scene can easily send to you the list

The Mars Volta has always sounded like a hybrid of Rush and Pink Floyd to my ears.

It all depends which Rush period you are refering to. For example the mid eighties era ('Power windows' and 'Hold your fire') has some similarities with Saga ('Heads or tales' and 'Behaviour') and It Bites (mainly 'Once around the world'), and even Queensryche (the album 'Empire' in peculiar, produced by Peter Collins who also produced Rush's above mentioned albums). But if you are refering to the classic Rush, check out earlier Kansas or the metal-prog bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Enchant (the album 'Wounded') and Lemur Voice.

"Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood)
