Smells like Rush Spirit

I want your suggestions on bands that share the same style or has been strongly influenced by Rush...probably my favorite band of all time.

Gimme suggestions and make another prog reviewer happy happy joy joy!

Dream Theater is the one band that pops to mind...

They were HEAVILY influenced by Rush.

I've got the latest Tiles CD "Window Dressing", but it doesn't ring RUSH to me. Heavier then anything Rush has done.

Heard Vapor Trails yet?

I'm afraid Tiles (like most Rush-derivative bands) doesn't do a whole lot for me. The guitarist and bassist are really good, tho.

I agree. There were numerous songs by Rush that I felt had a 'police' feel or vice versa. 'Synchronicity 2' for one, where the guitar and drums in particular make me think of Rush. Stu Copeland seemed very 'click perfect' like Peart.

^ I was trying to think of Triumph. Good Call! I have "Just a Game" and it's probably the closest thing to 'classic' Rush that I can think of.

80s and beyond, they did adopt some of that Police "new wave reggae" sound (goes back to the Clash, right?) but made it their own. I got worried when rap started to pop up, but I think that was just a breif hiccup in the band's journey.

That's one of the reasons I still like Rush...there's many hard rock/ metal bands that you'd think might be similar, but there's nobody really comparable to them, in style or approach.

It's heavy, but not in the same sense as Window Dressing. Mostly it has to do with the style of guitar amplification. Lifeson doesn't use a metal distortion patch on his effects. His is more about hard rock distortion, which adds a different flavor. I'm sure James would be more qualified to elaborate on the difference.

Vapor Trails sounds heavily distorted because of the poor mastering.The whole album is mastered too loud.

I have £2000 worth of HIFI and even it cant make any sense of it!

Coming from a longtime Rush fan:

Saga, Triumph and Zebra sound nothing like Rush (and I'm a fan of all four).

In fact, Triumph and Zebra have been around about as long as Rush, but Zebra didn't get a deal until '82 (first album in '83).

In terms of pure hard rock style (plus falsetto vocals, wailing lead guitarist/singer, etc.), Zebra is the "American Triumph." Or Triumph is the "Canadian Zebra."

Whatever.
