When heavy metal first appeared, Bowie was trying to sound like Anthony Newley!!!!

hmmm only slightly. only slightly...
i dont think they should be on here. its like led zeppelin or the who. they show progginess at times.
led zeppelin stretch their songs into medleys that last 20 mins and have prog elements.
the who do concept albums and experiment with prog (eg, 5:15, a quick one while he's away).
black sabbath have prog tendancies too but not a strong enough influence to define them as prog.

I'd find it really hard now to classify BS as prog, although I'm sure in the early 70's when the term was more widely (in the sense of covering a less specific genre) used, they would have been referred to as "progressive".
Their Sabotage album has a couple of very prog pieces, and of course Wakeman played with them on the previous album, SBS.

I bought this album the day it was released by Harvest in UK, and liked it for many years. But slowly as my musical tastes widen and perhaps matured, I started to hear weaknesses, and limited my listening to specific instrumental movements. I suppose son of Concerto turned me off - that ain't what I expect of Mr Morse.

Sabbath's Sabotage is their best one: the guitar really sounds like Mercyful Fate.
Regarding King Diamond's Abigail, it is about the same as Mercyful Fate, except the guitar and bass are less penetrating, because of the departure of genius Hank Shermann.

The Sabbs are without any question in my mind and many others the kings of heavy metal but Idon't think they fit into the progressive rock category. Rick Wakeman even provided keyboards on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, one of my faves along with Sabotage. If we start including bands such as Sabbath then we would have to consider other bands or artists such as Alice Cooper, Voivod, Judas Priest, Ywige Malmsteen, Joe Satriani etc. There are some artists/band which are featured on the site presently which have nothing to do with prog such as UZEB and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Why don't we have Miles Davis the inventor of fusion jazz which was a very "progressive" form of music? What Iam saying is that we should stick to the guidelines. I've got all kinds of musical tastes outside of the progrock genre but if we start adding all these other bands such as Sabbath we might as well just cal this site "musicarchives.com".

I agree with almost anything of the above. They are a true legend. Apart from the Ozzy and the Dio stuff they also made some albums with Tony Martin which are very decent IMHO.

Dio came back for one which was pretty good back 92 called Dehumanizer which had a wicked cover. I actually own a copy of this CD. It actually spawned a minor hit and video in the form of TV crymes.

Sabbath definetely have prog elements. Rick Wakeman plays on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Changes off Volume 4 has a mellotron, Johnny Blade off Never Say Die is a multi-part prog epic.
But yeah, everyone regards them as hard rock/heavy metal. Plua there's really no need to list them since everyone knows about them anyway.
Voivod SHOULD be included in the prog metal category though.

Prog is the new punk, becuase kids who shop at Hot Topic don't know Bill Bruford is God.

Hell yeah! For 'Nothingface' alone they should be included here. Not to mention 'Dimension Hatross', 'Angel Rat' and 'The Outer Limits'. More prog than Dream Theater ever did.
