Good recommendations - but why are so many of Hammer's back catalogue not reissued on CD  or worse for us never made it across to this side of the Atlantic?

Not released in the UK: Melodies, the David Earle Johnson/J Hammer album, the album after Black Sheep  (I guess Jan Hammer was proving a point playing Hendrix's Manic Depression on mini-moog here - but why was Fender bass master Colin Hodgkinson only employed to do the vocals on this record............................).

Not on CD: Oh Yeah! (one of my favourites from the mid 70's - made stranger with Melodies has been issued on CD, although the Early Years CD has a couple of tracks from Oh Yeah!), Like Children (with Jerry Goodman). I've imported the Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer Group from the USA - as I did Melodies. Somebody in the USA  made me a burn of the DEJ/JH album  from a vinyl source and tucked on a 30 minute promo of the Jan Hammer Group live playing tunes from Melodies and Oh Yeah, as an end -filler (worth finding)!

Perhaps you are aware that Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer toured the UK early this summer - rumours of an album together - publicity was minimal but I'm told the Coventry (?) gig was excellent. And the last bit of Hammer playing some form of jazz rock on disc I've come across: check out the British heavy jazz rock band  (Steve Clarke's) Network website for the compilation album. Hammer is playing keys on one track, a strange hybrid of thrash death metal and jazz rock - mde in the late 90's.

And Hammer's keyboard "voice" is unique and pretty obvious as soon as you hear it  - when Jens Johansson getting away from mediocre metal prog, then he too reveals his distinctive "voice".

The one fusion band that expectedly would not get as much attention on a prog rock forum, but a band that i truly truly love, is Weather Report. This is the group that first got me into jazz-fusion, and later led me down the road to prog rock. Although the group's leaders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter were by no means hard rock musicians, Weather Report churned out some truly incredible music. Their early 70s stuff is pretty avant-garde electric jazz, and their late 70s stuff was sounding more and more like smooth jazz, but in the heart of the 70s they really had developed a nice sound. The four best albums of theirs in my opinion are Sweetnighter (73), Mysterious Traveller (74), Tale Spinnin' (75), and Black Market (76). Some would include their best selling Heavy Weather (77) in their list of WR's best albums, but I think its too commercial. My favorite is definitely Mysterious Traveller, which Sweetnighter right behind. I really can't explain their sound very well to those of you who haven't heard the group... but i'd best describe it as electric fusion with a hint of world music. .

I also like WR. Very cool band, but yes, I like Heavy Weather a lot, and also the others you mentioned.

Quote Good recommendations - but why are so many of Hammer's back catalogue not reissued on CD  or worse for us never made it across to this side of the Atlantic?

Not released in the UK: Melodies, the David Earle Johnson/J Hammer album, the album after Black Sheep

D.E.J. & Hammer's Time Is Free is available as a remaster, whereas Hip Address is a solid-sounding reissue on Wounded Bird. (You can get the former at http://www.lasercd.com)

Quote Not on CD: Oh Yeah! (one of my favourites from the mid 70's - made stranger with Melodies has been issued on CD, although the Early Years CD has a couple of tracks from Oh Yeah!),

I, myself, do not understand why a remaster/reissue of this is not out.

Quote  Like Children (with Jerry Goodman).

A remaster of this was supposed to be out this year, but now it looks like "next year" is what it's going to be.

Quote I've imported the Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer Group from the USA - as I did Melodies. Somebody in the USA  made me a burn of the DEJ/JH album  from a vinyl source and tucked on a 30 minute promo of the Jan Hammer Group live playing tunes from Melodies and Oh Yeah, as an end -filler (worth finding)!

Holy cow! I'd love to hear that.

Quote Perhaps you are aware that Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer toured the UK early this summer - rumours of an album together - publicity was minimal but I'm told the Coventry (?) gig was excellent.

Same thing over here, Hammer's playing with Beck. I haven't caught a show, tho.

Quote And the last bit of Hammer playing some form of jazz rock on disc I've come across: check out the British heavy jazz rock band  (Steve Clarke's) Network website for the compilation album. Hammer is playing keys on one track, a strange hybrid of thrash death metal and jazz rock - mde in the late 90's.

Interesting. I'm not sure if Jan' site's discography is updated frequently enough to reflect all of the undercover work he does.

I certainly hope Michael Mann taps Jan to contribute an updated version of the classic Miami Vice theme for the film. (Yes, you heard me say that!)

Quote And Hammer's keyboard "voice" is unique and pretty obvious as soon as you hear it  - when Jens Johansson getting away from mediocre metal prog, then he too reveals his distinctive "voice".

Jens is amazing. A successor to Hammer, if there's one. His fusion stuff and work with Mastermind is fabulous. I just don't know why he wastes his time with Stratovarius, but I'm sure the steady pay helps.

I'm a HUGE fan of Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius is one of my biggest influences ever. And he IS the BEST bass player to ever walk the earth. He is THE MASTER.

MY favorite album is Mr. Gone.

I also really like Chick Corea Electric Band and Return To Forever.

I'm in an instrumental Prog/Fusion band called Jetavana Groove, mabye sometime when we get a recording of one of our sets or something I will upload it somewhere and post em on here:)

Hey, thats cool. If you ever get stuff recorded I'd love to hear it. What's the group's arrangement? Is your material original, cover stuff, or both?

Electric Savage and Wardances by Colosseum II are a hard rocking fusion of jazz rock with prog elements. Jon Hiseman's drumming is wonderful and as far Gary Moore's guitar.........Allan who?

You take the words right out of my word - noticed a Strat DVD in the shops a couple of weeks ago with JJ tucked away at the back of a cover photo, and can only surmiss it pays the bills - why didn't  Jens appear with Mastermind at Nearfest a few years ago, to promote Excelsior and Apocalypse?
