Topic: Zeuhl... Posted: February 27 2006 at 10:44 |
Is it all so weird ?
I don't knock other people's music, but from what I've heard of zeuhl (mostly Magma), I just can't get into no matter how many forced listenings.
Help me understand. Please.

I've tried Magma several times and... no use. I have placed it at the bottom of my pile of "to listen" albums. Maybe when I listen to it some day again (not soon)...
Matter of taste, I suppose.

First of all - do not force yourself to listen to something you do not like, the more you push it, the less likely you get it. Just leave it for the time being but do not throw away, return to it again later. That's what I did, anyway. It took me about three to four month of occasional listenings to start to like this kind of music. Also I would recommend to listen to Zao first - they are more jazzy and easier to comprehend. Try Weidorje as well. I think I began to like Zeuhl with Weidorje and Zao, then turned to Magma again, and now Udu Wudu and Kohntarkosz are among my favourites.
Also there is a band called Universal Totem Orchestra - Italian Zeuhl - beatiful and more easily accessible.
Hope above helps you, but if not - never mind - there are plenty of other music to enjoy apart from Zeuhl.

I love Zheul music ! Once you understand it spiritualy, it can put you in a indescribable state of mind... well, it's my opinion, and I don't want to sound weird, but Zheul and other form of experimental progressive music makes me able to relax and find myself while meditating
I don't know if there's a lot of people meditating while listening to Magma or Can, maybe it's to complex, but that complexity helps me understand myself !

Couldn't have put it better myself Jean. It's very much an acquired taste, but in my experience it's one of those things that people tend to 'get' either quite quickly or not at all.
Thyme Traveller, if Zeuhl doesn't float your boat you're in with the majority of posters on this site. Personally I've never understood the appeal of Dream Theater.

Not all.
Try to listen Weidorje, wich is a little more jazzy. Shub-Niggurath isn't weird but is kinda darkest or Happy Family great band too.

Well like Harmonium said, you'll never really enjoy certain music unless you can find something you can relate to. Perhaps it's what your interested in or how the music reflects your personality or ethic. Then you'll feel a part of the music. Even though music listening is a spectator kind of thing, you're still getting involved in some way. You just have to find some way to get involved in Zeuhl, and that could take time. A long time even.
Personally I just like the quirkiness and craziness of it all. It's sophisticated in some ways but childish in other ways. I like that balance.

if you play...err.. heck just enjoy great bass and drumming... you'll
get a kick out of De Futura off of Udu Wudu. That's some serious bass
playing by Janik Top hahahha. First time I heard it I was like...
since when did Jack Bruce play with Magma hahahha... he has that Bruce
'growl' to his tone. And Christian Vander is well.... Christian
Vander. I really like Udu Wudu. Get it, heck get them
all. Love Magma!
