Topic: Is Duke a concept album? Posted: February 03 2006 at 17:31 |
I heard this for the FIRST time recently, and for a while looking at the song names and stuff 'Duchess' 'Duke's Travels' 'Duke's end' etc. I thought they were characters and maybe there was a storyline? I dunno, I didn't pick up on the lyrics much but I really enjoyed listening to it. Can anyone tell what the bloody hell the album is about?
Maybe by those who don't hate it hehe

Well I asked this same question from me when I first started listening Duke as a whole package.
I have never had time to focus on the lyrics, but I think there is some
kind of connection with all those songs to Phil Collins divorce. Phil
Collins is not actually that bad lyricist!
Oh yes duke is wonderful album, everyone here should try it!
EDIT: oh yes have you noticed that 'Behind The Lines" and 'Duke's End"
have the same melody, JUST like Dancing With The Moonlit Knight and
Aisle of Plenty.

ummm here's the deal
The Songs:
- Behind the Lines
- Duchess
- Guide Vocal
- Turn It On Again
- Duke's Travels
- Duke's End
were planned to be on one side of the record as a 30 minute suite, and it does follow a storyline of a man enthralled by books and television and pop star, or something
they decided to split it up on the album, because the B Side was considered to weak (despite great tracks like Man of our Times and Cul-De-Sac) and they didn't want to invite comparisons to Supper's Ready.
Cool to think Genesis was planning a 30 minute suite in 1980 though - on the 1980 Duke tour they played those six songs through as a suite, must have been amazing.

Yeah, in retrospect, I wish they had done it as a continuous suite. Never mind if the B-side would have been clearly weaker.
Interesting information NetsNJFan, thanks!

I've always taken this album as autobiographical.Genesis realising they have to move on from prog to pastures new.
