I dont know about you but I feel like a bunch of teenagers are running this site and labeling masterpieces to every single CD they put their hands on. Where are your parameters? the stetics of the movement? 12 out of 19 in the front page of this site today are 5 star recordings. Gimme a break!

You make a good point. But people are usually compelled to write something only if they love it or hate it.

I agree. I decided before I post any reviews to go back and listen to my entire prog collection to get a sense of perspective. I bet most of these guys posting 5star reviews wont even be listening to those albums in a couple of years.

it seems that there are all either 5 star or 1 star reviews.

I am sure some people label 5 stars to balance up the 1 star ratings .. in whole the rating system isn`t perfect but it seems to work OK

That's true.  IIRC, I've given everything I've reviewed 5 stars.  But I haven't reviewed everything I've heard/own.

people, have you thought for just one minute that the reviews made are purely subjective and that the rating depends on what the reviewer feels towards an album...what is THE actual problem here?that albums get 5 stars if people like them?...

Currently there's a 5 star review for Therion - Theli on the front page. This is a 3 star album for me at best. Of course the review is valid - freedom of speech/opinion and everything. But reading this review is just painful to me, because I am absolutely sure that some of the things he says are simply wrong - for example the statement that Therion created the genre of Symphonic Metal with this album. In 1997 most of the typical Symphonic Metal bands released their debut albums, but IMO a certain Mr. Malmsteen wrote that kind of music even 10 years before that.

But what can we do? It's best to ignore single ratings/reviews like that and have faith in that the sum (or rather: average) that is computed out of these ratings will be meaningful if most of the reviews are sane.

I love so many albums, but I don't rate every album as a masterpiece and I can't believe that so many people don't care about the importance of a "MASTERPIECE".

I have a few CDs in my collection which I have rated 2 stars, mainly due to lack of oomph in the music whilst some parts are good!!
