Ooh. Now, if it was band vs band then I'd say Banco, purely because of output (ocassionally quantity DOES win over quality) but as it's merely Ys vs Darwin! then there's no question: Balletto wins by a good few yards.

If you haven't already heard Il Balletto di Bronzo's masterpiece, not-me-TP then you must. Immediately. It's the high watermark of the Italian prog scene, IMO.

YS, even as much as I love Darwin. YS is just an incredible album.  The subject matter is just the cherry on top.  Don't understand a word of Italian,  with YS.. translations aren't needed hahahahhah.

While "Ys" is a hell of a masterpiece of Italian prog hard rock, I must prefer BMS's "Darwin!", since it includes more diversity: also, the BMS musicians were capable of diplaying lots of textures and clever interplaying in a higher degree than their compatriots of Balletto. Any of BMS's first 3 albums is better, richer and more accomplished than (the excellent) "Ys".

   Regards.

The question you pose is horribly hard. These two albums are quite likely the pinnacle of Italian prog, but yes, by a small notch, Ys wins.

Banco is certainly the more "sophisticated" of the two prog groups and Darwin is a real highlight of the whole scene, but it is the very raw power of Ys that makes it just that bit more special for me ...
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."
