Hello friends.

Last week I found a lot of Ant Phillips CD's on the used section of my favourite record shop, so I bought them all.
The variety of the music on the CDs is amazing, going from the orchestral to the acoustic guitar/piano pieces, from synth-pop to ambient; anyway, the overall quality is satisfying, especially for the older material that comes from the Archives.

If there's someone out there that loves Ant's work, please just let me know which are the best CDs to check out (and which to avoid), and I'll figure if I can be happy with what I got or either I miss something essential.

Well, if I can remember, there is one person online here who has an extensive Phillips collection. Myself, I only have/remember 1984, Geese and the Ghost and a few others. The quiet acoustic stuff is great for what it is, though sometimes I think you only need a little of this to go a long way. I remember liking 1984 a lot, being a concept album with interlocking music.

I personally like Slow Dance (rock mixed with classic, synthesizers mixed with acoustic instruments) , Sides (a rock album, with some commercial sides, but also very good progrock), Tarka (same as slow dance but more acoustic and more like a movie soundtrack) , Back To The Pavilion (a mixture of different things) and Ivory Moon (solo piano pieces) the best.

Personally I don't like The Geese And The Ghost much, but many others do: it's one of his most popular albums.

I confirm the quality of these albums although I would like to add some other items worthwhile of checking out :

  • The geese & the ghost is one of my favourites for the great tunes & the Genesis similarities
  • Private parts & pieces 1 has some inspired music
  • There's definitely some exciting music on PP&P 8 (New England), a bit similar to PP& P 2, a lot of different atmospheres
  • I would add also the first two missing links albums to this list, though the tracklisting contains very different sounding fragments put together in one album, this kind of ambient music suits me a lot more than "Slow waves & soft stars". The short song format is simply more effective in that kind of music but maybe that's personal.

I have a couple of albums. I recently bought the 'Anthology' which showed a truly diverse and progressive artists trying out various genres and succeeding with most. I love his beautiful acoustic playing on songs like 'Treganna Afternoon', the synth experiments of '1984' and the bittersweet pop tunes such as 'Lucy Will'.

I only have one original album- 'Sides'- which is an enjoyable album with some neat AOR/prog pop songs alongside some lovely more symphonic tracks on the other side.

Agree With Ken : "The geese and the ghost" & "1984" are my favourites
