in a while but it's a very interesting track. It's not intended to be a joke in
any way.

I remember an interview where it was said that this song and I Know
What I Like were in fact intended as some sort of critical jokes, a joke with
a deeper thought and meaning.

If you listen to Harrold the Barrel you must surely say that the lyrics are
not fully serious, but the subject is. Genesis liked to make songs like that.
Presenting a serious subject in a funny way. That makes the subject and
the story told even more ridiculous and shoudl give the listener a feeling
of relativity. Get "M Out By Friday is an example as well.

That probably is the thought behind the open end. Well, it is not that
open, but you don't hear a bang or something. Genesis wants you to
remain with your thoughts about the subject and not end the song
laughing out loud or skipping the last seconds just not to hear the bang.

I guess you could think of it as somewhat of a "joke" if in that matter. My
intention was only to say that they meant for the song to be taken
seriously with a sort of dark humor type edge.

I first heard this quite some ago. I liked it right off the bat - but I wasn't exactly rolling on the floor with laughter listening to it. The way the song ends (very seriously) is the most memorable part.

I guess whether its a serious song or "British humor" depends on what the listener is personally attracted to, in the different moods presented by the song: The silly Benny Hill stuff or the dramatic notes. I never liked the Benny Hill show.

Hey, I completely missed that you just got Nursery Cryme. Good choice, walrus333. Do you have any other Genesis albums?

I think the last piano chord of the song is like a sus4 or something, indicating that a choice is given.

And speaking of 'Get 'em Out', do the lines "Buy at 5 and sell at 34" have anything to do with time signitures and the like, where 'buying' is like the group is working hard to set something up, and 'selling' is where you give the listener what they want to hear? these kinds of things are all over the place, like the Gentle Giant song "Working all Day" where the song is kind of hard to listen to, but then the middle scetion is really pleasing to the ears. Or CTTE, where the main verse is the same way, and then the "Crossed a line around the changes of the summer" is so pleasing to the ears. Well, anyway..
I begin to wonder if the points of all the ancient myths are solemnly di-rected straight.. at.. meeeeeeeeee!

[QUOTE=walrus333]

I got Nursery Cryme yesterday and I was wondering about the lyrics of harold the barrell. Musically the song doesnt seem very serious but lyrically its pretty serious its about a guy comiting suicide, whats up with that?!

myabe im just completely confused on the lyrics though

[/QUOTE

recently in the newspaper there was an interview with Jim Kerr of the Minds, mais oui,

and they were asking him about the songs he liked to listen to at certain times, whatever, you know.

and his guilty pleasure' track was old hapless Harold The Barrel.

why guilty? because it is just a bit of fun. though not that funny.

ca - ame the night a mist dissolved the trees

Bringing the message in the way of a joke sometimes make the content of the message stronger.
I think you are right that they had a meaning with the lyrics.

@ carpet_crawler, yes I have selling England By the Pound and A Trick of The Tail

On a note unrelated to the lyrics after the final "take a running jump" sounds like it should explode into a huge guitar solo to me. for some reason Im always expecting them to do that but every time they end witht he same somber chords, the ending is cool in itself though

If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!
