genres can be useful but are often distracting. music can never truly be captured by categories.

Not much room for argument, even though I do agree.

We should have a separate genre for each band, then we can say Yes
definitely belongs to the Yes music genre. Also, ABWH could go in the
Yes music category. But then, would 90125 really fit into the same
genre as Close To The Edge. Oh, sod it.

Right. It's hard to relate some bands with only one genres. Many bands make music that is a mix of many genres. I'm not only talking about albums being made in different genres. I'm talking about separate songs on some album being made in diferent subgenres.

A more profound question is:
Why is the "C" silent in Crap Music?

I think "music" is a bit too restricting. Let's call it "stuff" instead.

I think different tracks are distracting. All bands should just write one song albums and be done with it.

Genre are only made to give a direction for people. If someone is looking for rush, he knows he must look in rock, or prog, or something else maybe, but he knows it will not be in the rap section. It is just a CUE. The bands don't have to be in any genres, and often they don't know and don't care where they are !
So, It's a GENERAL classification for people...only ! For that reason, it makes me laugh when people are frustrated about seeing one of their favorite band in a "wrong " genre. That's stupid ! We shouldn't discus about genre anymore...
