I love Annie Haslam's voice, she is absolutely great. But I think Anderson performs Turn of the Century slightly better than Haslam. Overall his voice creates a more spacey atmosphere and mixes with other instruments, but Haslam’s voice overshadows other instruments and there is a sense of disconnection between her voice and instruments, IMHO.

I agree, as much as I too love Annie Haslam's voice, the original is best.

I assume you mean "who is Annie Haslam"? She was the lead singer of Renaissance - check out their entry on this site for more info. |

I haven't heard the version by Annie Haslam, I'm intrigued! Can't really vote if I haven't heard it....
.... BTW although I know a lot of people like this song, to me it's a rather pleasant, extended pop song rather than a piece of progressive music. |

It would be in my Yes top 5! True, it's not among their most progressive pieces, but it is a beautiful song, thanks to a combination of Howes classical guitar, Wakemens keyboard work, Andersons soaring vocals and also the lyrics. It's not often I really take much notice of lyrics, but in this case there are some very moving lines and wonderful imagery. |

The version I've heard is on "Live under Brazilian Skies" - see here http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007ULNFY/qid=1133 453960/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_9_5/202-1215961-6501422 . I think Moogtron is right about it being on a Yes tribute album as well - possibly this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000AYG5/qid=1133 454088/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_8_4/202-1215961-6501422

...I agree about the lyrics, not often you can say that about a Yes song!! Although I'm a big Yes fan this particular track isn't one of my favourites. |

Annie has performed that song in a CD called "TALES FROM YESTERDAY – A Tribute to Yes", released in 1995. You can hear an excerpt here: http://www.magnacarta.net/audio/yesterday.html She has also performed Genesis "Ripples". Edited by Gomah |

But let each one sing their own music, Yes is outstanding despite and because (contradictory but accurate IMO) Jon Anderson's unique voice (Unique doesn't mean good always) sounds perfect with Yes (Another contradiction). Annie Haslam is incredible with Renaissance stuff. Why search for covers if you have the real deal? Unless is a Springsteen cover by Manfred Mann Iván BTW: Ekzodo, if you want to enjoy Annie Haslam's voice, get Song of Sheherezade, if you can buy the Renaisance "Live at Carnegie Hall" album better. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD. asp?cd_id=3024 Edited by ivan_2068 |
