Record companies for choosing the most simple, brainless stuff to sell to the masses. 

actually, punk probably helps music (at least in the aspect that punk in its true form is inherently anti-record company, anti-pop, anti-fashion, and thus feeds a thriving underground).  pop-punk, however has done irreparable damage.

 Rec. companies and then MTV.

 Some radio stations also promote a lot of awful "songs".

I'd have to say radio, for homogenizing and "dumbing down" tastes, and TV, especially videos, for making too many of the younger generation focus on an artist's appearance, "look" and style. I hate the way almost no one smiles in videos any more (gotta be tough, right?), and the prevalent focus on materialism and the glorification of thug culture in rap/hip hop, especially.

I think MTV, and artists like Christina Aguilera, to name just one, are especially bad for young teen females, and their body image. The underlying message is "dress like a hooker, get plastic surgery, and please your boyfriend whatever you do, girls, because that's how your worth is determined."

The message for boys seems to be "always act tough, chase the 'bling,' get involved in street crime, and treat females like whores and possessions -- they are only there to gratify your desires."

I don't blame anyone. The masses want simple catchy tunes and that's what they get. In the end, they still like music.

 Id say its a combination of record companies, MTV, and the general public. Money and success are more important to most people than artistic excellence.
