Over the past 18 years on PA I've tried out many albums that are HIGHLY rated by the PA community which I just can't get into. Many I've been able to learn to enjoy with repeated listens, but some have remained inaccessible or unenjoyable to me despite very high ratings/rankings by the PA average.
Can you come up with a list of ten (10) albums that you've never connected with--despite repeated efforts--that are VERY highly here on PA? Mine would have to include (from the most highly rated albums in PA's database): King Crimson Larks' Tongues in Aspic PFM Storia di un minuto Museo Rosenbach Zarathustra Rush Permanent Waves Mike Oldfield Ommadawn Bacamarte Depois de Fim Marillion Misplaced Childhood Porcupine Tree In Absentia Gong Radio Gnome Invisible Vol. 3 - You IQ The Road of Bones Though I'd also have to report: Edge of Sanity Crimson * Le Orme Felona e Sorona Marillion Script for a Jester's Tear Kansas Leftoverture Gorguts Obscura Eloy The Ocean Dün Eros Riverside Anno Domini High Definition * Modry Efekt Svët Hledacu Haken The Mountain Birds and Buildings Bantam to Behemoth Ayreon The Human Equation * Marillion Clutching at Straws * Arena Contagion * Miles Davis Bitches Brew Deep Purple Machine Head Can Ege Bemyasi * Denotes albums I feel deserving of 2 star ratings Edited by BrufordFreak - 18 hours 50 minutes ago at 13:51 |

Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom Soft Machine - Third (Facelift is horrid but Moon in June is good) King Crimson - In the Court...(The first and last songs are good, the others meh and Moonchild is bad) Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden Tool - Lateralus Miles Davis - In A Silent Way Miles Davis - Bitches Brew IQ - All releases (Nichols voice is like nails on a chalkboard) Art Zoyd - HÄXAN Magma - All releases Edited by Grumpyprogfan - 15 hours 40 minutes ago at 17:01 |

Oh yeah Lateralus. Mars Volta doesn’t turn my stomach but irritates my nervous system. So many more… solo Peter Hammill, Not a huge fan of magma or marillion but they are at least ‘bearable’.

Non mi svegliate ve ne prego
ma lasciate che io dorma questo sonno, c'è ancora tempo per il giorno quando gli occhi si imbevono di pianto, i miei occhi... di pianto. |

1) Radiohead: OK Computer
2) Radiohead: Kid A 3) Radiohead: The Bends 4) The Mars Volta: De-loused in the Comatorium 5) The Mars Volta: Frances the Mute 6) Magma: Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh 7) Magma: 1001 Centigrades 8) Cardiacs: Sing to God 9) Opeth: Blackwater Park 10) Marillion: Misplaced Childhood Radiohead, the techno/ electronica, whiny vocals, etc, etc. I've listened to these three albums and there is not a track I can say I really like. Not my cup of tea. Magma and Cardiacs, despite some attempts, Zeuhl and RIO subcategories of Prog just don't appeal to me. Marillion, not that I can't stomach them, I just have always found them to be boring. Which may be a worst fate. Opeth, The growls just spoil it. Which is a shame. There's actually good music here. I do try to ignore the growls for the music, but the growls are nails on a chalkboard. The Mars Volta, I refer you to Valdez's post above. Edited by Big Sky - 8 hours 10 minutes ago at 00:31 |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I don't think I can manage ten, but two highly regarded albums I've never managed to appreciate are Relayer and ITCOTCK. I also think Fragile is overated, there are a couple of tracks I like but a lot of filler
I have recently come to appreciated Selling England By The Pound, having previously failed to get into it. < defer="" ="https://static.cloudflareinsights.com/beacon.min.js/vcd15cbe7772f49c399c6a5babf22c1241717689176015" integrity="sha512-ZpsOmlRQV6y907TI0dKBHq9Md29nnaEIPlkf84rnaERnq6zvWvPUqr2ft8M1aS28on72PdrCzSjY4U6VaAw1EQ==" -cf-beacon=""rayId":"92f97d779a390876","Timing":"name":"cfExtPri":true,"cfL4":true,"cfSpeedBrain":true,"cfCacheStatus":true,"version":"2025.3.0","token":"717409392a644498b4dbcbfbeafd4181"" crossorigin="anonymous"> Edited by AlanB - 6 hours 30 minutes ago at 02:11 |

"Great" Albums that You Can't StomachYou should chew them up a bit before stomaching them... It's easier for digestion ![]() ![]() Kidding aside, most of those in those lists, I can't agree with But Misplaced Chilhood I will agree on... very boring and unbearably chatty/garrulous/talkative, leaving no spce for the instruments . < defer="" ="https://static.cloudflareinsights.com/beacon.min.js/vcd15cbe7772f49c399c6a5babf22c1241717689176015" integrity="sha512-ZpsOmlRQV6y907TI0dKBHq9Md29nnaEIPlkf84rnaERnq6zvWvPUqr2ft8M1aS28on72PdrCzSjY4U6VaAw1EQ==" -cf-beacon=""rayId":"92f993a46ed2b711","Timing":"name":"cfExtPri":true,"cfL4":true,"cfSpeedBrain":true,"cfCacheStatus":true,"version":"2025.3.0","token":"717409392a644498b4dbcbfbeafd4181"" crossorigin="anonymous">

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Hi,
I have never really had that issue beyond the first time, when TD's Mysterious Semblance At The Strand of Nightmares scared me senseless, though I'm not sure that the title made a strong difference, and sent me on an internal excursion that was harsh and similar to a Dennis Wheatley novel. All in all, already being aware of the arts (house with over 40K books of Literature, many of them Portuguese, Brazilian and Spanish writers ... ), I knew that unlike don Juan's comments, a lot of this paper was not ____ ... and thus, after that first time, I no longer had any reactions that harsh to any music, though I have to admit that things like In Camera was a bit on the ... yeah ... side!!!! To me, a lot of these things were ... just another artist ... just another painting ... just another novel ... just another piece of music ... and thus, the individuality, is the part that brought me to all of them ... and to me, this STILL is, what "progressive" meant and is all about, despite the bizarre numbers used here and there, which is a part of the time and place, but not the original music and where it came from! |
|
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
