Topic: Al Di Meola - What albums are essential? Posted: October 23 2005 at 23:41 |
Hi, I know Al Dimeola through 2 albums : Elegant Gypsy (absolute masterpiece, I just couldn't stop typing when I was writing my review) and Cielo E Terra (a good and relaxing acoustic record with a unique style).
What are the essential albums from this genius?
This thread can also be used as an appreciation thread for Al Di Meola.
Thanks for adding this man to the progarchives.

what a great album. complex melodies yet beautiful, great developing - much more than the usual jazz-rock, exelent musicians, pay attantion to the percussions!
most of the album is electric, yet there is one piece of accustic guitar - short suite devided into 3 parst, with percussions - YUMMI !!!!!!

What about the album, called "the last jazz rock album" (debatable) when it was first released: Scenario. Perhaps more accurately this can be called an Al Dimeola/Jan Hammer album, because on DiMeola allows Hammer equal billing on the tracks he plays (but former MO's Jan Hammer had been a regular on all ADiM albums up to this point), (coincidently Tony Williams also gives Hammer a similar amount of space on his album Joy Of Flying, ditto Jeff Beck), plus Bill Bruford and Phil Collins provide drums.

Today I have reviewed Anthology for this site, in my opinion it is one of the best and most comprehensive progrock compilations ever released!

Elegant Gypsy 1977 (he is!) a masterpiece
Land of the Midnight Sun 1976
Soarching through a Dream 1985 , forget Cielo e Terra because this very similar but much
more interesting!

Just want to correct something, having been reminded that the request was for essential Al Dimeola recordings. What I've suggested is not essential IMHO but occasionally goes into the player, in fact the only thing I've played in the last 12 months is very specifically the duo he did with Steve Vai: Race With the Devil On Spanish Highway, so I don't have a deperate need for a DiMeola diet.

I would also recommend those albums but would also put Kiss My Axe on that list.

In addition to his own work, I would highly recommend the Go albums (live in Paris is really nice, and expansive).

I have all of his '70's solo stuff, I think. The newest one I have The Infinite Desire (1998) is quite good.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

^ absolutely, in fact all the World Sinfonia albums are superb, especially The Grande Passion.. I would also second Scenario though it was a big departure for him into electronic-based music, and Tirami Su, the sister album to Cielo E Terra, is excellent

I love pretty much all of what he does. His latest and it's a good one is Consequences of Chaos. I recommend it. It also has a host of heavy weight musicians on it.
Saw Return To Forever live in Vancouver this past Monday with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and of course Al Di Meola. What a treat of a show.
