I was wondering if anyone has read Silent Singing: The complete collected lyrics of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. Is it any good? Does Ian provide useful comments on his lyrics?

Hi,
This might not exactly sound right ... but honestly, I'm not sure that we need any more from both Ian Anderson and Jon Anderson. Ian Anderson, I don't feel well acquainted with enough to discuss, but Jon Anderson, started out nice, and somewhere along the way he lost it and forgot what the whole thing was about, except some nice money from it all! There are some books of lyrics around, though they are not exactly well known stuff, but they are there. The Doors and Van der Graaf Generator are two of them, and the book of Peter Hammill lyrics was quite special at the time, though not the only one. I think Bob Dylan had several already, for example, but some others would be much better represented in writing. Here's a sample of some of the good ones that should/could/might get a book after they pass away! Mike Heron and Robin Williamson ... the ISB was about poetry to music in their earlier days, and probably until "Earth Span". Roy Harper ... one of the few pure "wordsmiths" ... sadly completely ignored. And he will never get an OBE, either for his salty comments. And besides, he didn't make gazillion pounds of money for the rich folks in England! The works by ANGE and specially the stuff by the Decamps brothers, and their lyrics are special and well acted out, to the point that one of the brothers is redoing many of those early albums, for a new audience of today. It is not likely to happen, but the words used in many pieces for AD2 would make for an incredible book, for their design and images alone ... it is amazing material whose images end up lighting up your imagination, like only The Doors ever did. It's a shame that so much of it will be ignored, but a lot of it, can even be studied to be important and specially meaningful ... by the time you get to Apocalyptic Bore and Mozambique ... at that point, it's not just lyrics for a song anymore! But I'm not sure that many folks want to read some of this stuff ... some of it is too much for our imaginations, and its time has come and gone, and ... more often than not ... totally forgotten and ignored. Hi,
Another thing that is coming up these days is that reading is not an important thing anymore, and at times, it makes you wonder how some folks got a college degree in America, and have not exactly shown an appreciation for things that were written, like the words have no meaning anymore. In this sense, for example, a podcast is more important these days, than any thoughts about "reading" ... and for me, this is an issue, but I'm not sure what is right to say and do anymore. A lot of the examples are very clear in these days, when checking these threads, and how the comments are about things in general, specially when one has to "read" the comment ... and it feels like it always gets partially ignored so that only a small part of the comment is mentioned at all ... I am not sure that a perspective is not missing, though it is usually thought that the long comment usually misses the point, but the idea/thought is that it is a much wider thought and discussion than the simplistic comments. Hard to say what the issue is, but (for example) it is not fun when some folks say things like the comment is "snobbish" or "condescending" when in essence the actual saying of that is more of that attitude than otherwise. It's like words don't mean anything anymore! It's really scary and an educational thing I would imagine. And "libraries" are falling apart as the books are digitized, but I'm not exactly sure that anyone is actually reading that digitization of the book ... maybe this is the transition stage to the new way and form ... but I'm not sure that a Moby Dick, War and Peace and other long things will be around any time soon ... even songs/music that is longer than the standard commercial sounding thing, is usually considered full of "filler", and that is even discussed on the big bands of the "progressive" era, and a lot of the music today is not as long, or as important it seems, though it gets a little reaction for the usual "five minutes" ... and then it's gone! The best in all the arts last a long time, and are still appreciated ... though you would not know that by being a part of this board and the majority of its threads. Same issue with the news things ... the comment is more important than the issue ... and five minutes later it's like nothing happened, and the fart has already dissipated itself!

Well, I must admit I've now bought the volume - and it's fascinating.

Hi, Good deal ... try to see if you can find used copies of the Peter Hammill book, and then the Jim Morrison book ... it will give you a really nice difference and perspective on lyrics.
