Coppelius is a Germany band from Berlin, founded 1997. They pay metal on drums, double bass, cello, and clarinet on a very progressive way and sing in German and English langauge. They perform on stage in formal, old-fashioned clothes, inspired mainly by the Victorian era, wearing tophats. This era, as well as the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, are also an inspiration for a lot of the themes in their music. Coppelius defined their style as Chamber Core (in German Kammercore) of the 19th Century.

In my opinion Coppelius' style is unique and probalby slightly comareable to Apocalyptica. They obviously love Iron Maiden and they cover some of their songs in their wonw progressive style.

Tagged as Symphonic Metal overall on RYM, but a couple of their releases are tagged as progressive (Tumult! as Progressive Rock and Extrablatt as Progressive Metal). Discogs lists them as a 19th-century-folk-metal band.

Apocalyptica have been suggested here several times over the years, but were rejected towards the end of the noughties, and none of their releases since then have led to them being re-evaluated.

I'll listen to some of their music over the next day or two, and if it seems to me that Coppelius might have a chance here anywhere, I'll drop a link to this topic in the appropriate team thread, though they might insist on a more expansive original biography from you before agreeing to evaluate.

An attepmpt to expand the bands biography:

COPPELIUS is a German band that play, according to their own "chambercore of the 19th Century”, a mixture of metal and chamber music - on drums, double bass, cello and clarinet in a progressive way, and singing in German and English. They founded in 1997 in Berlin and achieved greater attention when they won second place in the jury and the first place of the public vote at the 2002 Berlin Emergenza Festival. They subsequently played as support acts for Urah Heep, Subway to Sally and Fillder's Green, among others and released their first demo EP in 2005.

The musical style is influenced by Iron Maiden, among others, whereby the speciality lies in the use of clarinet, cello and double bass which are usually heavily distorted. The clarinets are also altered in sound with various effects and often play solos. The band members created a fictitious identity that is strongly inspired by the 19th century, which they strictly cultivate in interviews and on the website. Consequently they do not reveal their real names and only use pseudonyms such as Max Coppella (vocals, clarinet, cembalo), Herr Linus von Doppelschlag (drums), Graf Lindorf (vocals, cello), Comte Caspar (vocals, clarinet, cembalo), Sissy Voss (double bass) and Bastille (butler, vocals). They perform in formal, old-fashioned clothes with frock coats, father's coats, white upturned collars and top hats, inspired mainly by the Victorian era. The themes of their music are also mainly inspired by is era, as well as the works of German Romantic and Gothic horror author E.T.A. Hoffmann.

Thanks for the updated biography - that's now enough for the topic to be accepted by one or other of our teams, assuming that the music is also deemed to to meet the criteria. Thumbs Up

There are no reviews of any of their albums on RYM and not many are even tagged, but going by the tags that exist, their most progressive albums might be 2013's 'Extrablatt' and 2009's 'Tumult!'. A good many of the tracks on their more recent albums seem to be very short, and accompanied by spoken narration. From the samples I've heard, they remind me in some ways of the Greek band 'Villagers of Ioannina City', who were added to Psych/Space recently, but it was only a weak approval in that sub. 'Extrablatt' is tagged as progressive metal on RYM and 'Tumult!' as progressive rock, but I'm not totally convinced that either album is going to get them a place in the archives.

If any other collaborators happen to drop by here, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are regarding this band's suitability for inclusion here.

All their albums on YouTube can be accessed via https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKDzC5NN8Pc5X4GpySQEGQQ.

The jury is still out for the time being...

Edit: I love the chord progressions in the 'Butterblume' track on that 'Extrablatt' album. Shame the track's only a shade over 2 minutes long.
