Hi,

One of the folks that was responsible for a lot of the music we now call "progressive" has passed away.

Jim was huge in LA ... and started at KNAC which was a huge meca for "imports" and new music, and eventually went to KLOS and then KMET where he was on the day that the conglomerate fired everyone and turned the station into a washing machine new wave music.

Jim has never really said much, that I am aware of of those days, but I think his status made a difference and he had to maintain some composure to be able to play PF, Genesis, Rush, Jethro Tull, Yes and so much more that it is really difficult to even discuss his value to the time and place and how so many of those "imports" sold because they were being played.

I suppose that one day or another we will all go away for a different galaxy and address, but I have always had a soft spot for folks like him that put out a strong effort ... at a time that the media owners were a bunch of cakefaces (still are!) and went around saying things like ... not in my station it won't! ... because of the dumbest things ever.  Included in this was the FTC hiring old ladies to find out how many times those stations (Santa Barbara included) played PF or Frank Zappa and how many times the 4 letter words were used ... stories that are so insane ... but it was the time that helped all the new music to come alive .. and then some.

RIP Jim ... well deserved rest!

KLOS and KMET were the competing number 1 FM stations. Their signal stretched to Santa Barbara on a clear night.

Sad to hear. I occasionally caught Jim Ladd's show on Sirius XM.  One of the rare opportunities to hear Porcupine Tree broadcast.

Opted to cancel my subscription this month since they exiled "Deep Tracks" to channel 308.  My car's radio doesn't even go up that high. Ouch

RIP. Ladd's a legend, especially if you're from SoCal.

Oh man!!!!! I grew up with Jim Ladd on KLOS 95-1/2 and KMET 94.7 back in the 70's. I met him a few times at different concert events where they had tables. I still have a bunch of the KLOS stickers he and other DJs would give out (below are some I have). The man was a legend in the SoCal FM radio scene and yea he would play all the UK prog, that was the first place I heard Genesis. IIRC he was playing tracks from Seconds Out and I was hooked. First time I heard JTull as well......somewhere in storage I have cassettes of his radio show I would tape.
RIP Mr Ladd, you helped mold my rock music life......Thumbs Up

I think I got these stickers from the Hemispheres tour at the LA Forum.

The stickers came from Rush's Signals tour (1982-83), when Golden Earring opened for them. They played two nights at Long Beach Arena, then two nights at the Forum. Yes, I was there (on Friday night) and those stickers were immediately added to the back of the family van!

Not sure if people unfamiliar with Stawka Większa Niż Życie will get it. :_:

^ I think your right, I saw that tour at the Forum. Somewhere I have stickers from the Hemispheres show, maybe they were KMET stickers..........Ha! I never added any of my stickers to our family car, I was too young to drive but I am sure had I been driving in '77 I would not have these stickers anymore. I was driving in '83 but still kept all my stickers in album sleeves.
Fun stuff and memories.......

Rush and Golden Earring - not only 2 great bands but possibly the 2 with the longest unchanged line up!

Off topic, but it's very nice to see so much fellow SoCal representation on the forums haha.

I'm too young to have heard Ladd on KLOS 95.5 (to my knowledge), but I did indeed listen to that channel when I was younger with my dad, as well as 100.3 The Sound (when it existed, I actually preferred it since it focused more on the Classic Rock I liked, but sadly, it is no more).

I used to love him on Deep Tracks back when we had cars with Sirius. Sucks that the whole channel is "stuck on 308," as said above, that place had a lot of good stuff on it.
