Technically they were Rainbow before they were Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.  We could add 50 bands that fall under this category where a member of the band formed or toured as the primary band under their name.  

Also, technically, Candace Night is the singer of Blackmore's Night.  LOL

Cosmo's Factory.  Creedence Clearwater Revisited's name at one point when court injunction did not allow them to use CCRevisited.  Technically, named after CCR album Cosmo's Factory, Cosmo is drummer Doug Clifford's nickname.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band is the most obvious one for me. Also Hattler (Kraan bassist Hattler's band).

Alan Parsons never performed lead vocal duties on any of the Project's studio albums, but he is doing lead vocals during some of their recent tours, notably on Eye in the Sky. Lead vocals are still shared among multiple vocalists when they perform, for obvious reasons.

  Lady Luck blessed Fleetwood Mac's rhythm section with a parade of composers/singers/ and unique musicians.  You could argue that Mick and John were the least talented members of Fleetwood Mac. Wink
