It's hard to imagine a time Beyond and Before Progressive Rock came along. Yesterday and Today, Everyday's a good day with the music of YES, and if there's one band who knows all about Survival, it's this group of Astral Travellers who've been around longer than any other prog band. It hasn't all been Sweetness and light though where Every Little Thing could escalate into arguments and Drama within the group when they came Close to the Edge of splitting up in the mid-1970's, what with so many Fragile egos at stake. Despite many changes of line-up though, YES are still going strong today even though there are no original members remaining in the band. Looking Around at the YES line-up today, Steve Howe is the only semi-permanent presence in the band, having been with YES since 1971. Anyway, it's back now to where it all began with the self-titled YES album from 1969 which features a rare song contribution from drummer Bill Bruford: "Harold Land" - mainly because he came up with the title.
YES line-up:- Jon Anderson; Peter Banks; Bill Bruford; Tony Kaye; & Chris Squire. Track Listing 1. Beyond and Before (4:52) 2. I See You (6:47) 3. Yesterday and Today (2:49) 4. Looking Around (3:58) 5. Harold Land (5:40) 6. Every Little Thing (5:41) 7. Sweetness (4:31) 8. Survival (6:18) Edited by Psychedelic Paul - November 21 2023 at 16:54 |

I've never heard of the Buffalo 66 movie. Does it relate to YES in some way?

If you want to see a movie with great music, then try Zachariah - the first electric western, starring Don Johnson, Joe Walsh and the James Gang and Country Joe and the Fish. 1971: Zachariah - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3n6Nccb9CM

I love the album, not as good as Time and a Word though. People tend to pair the two together

Zachariah has a great opening sequence too. That's when you realise this movie is like no western you've ever seen or heard before. |

I prefer time and a word also. I feel like they were moving a bit closer to pure prog at that point and away from psych and pop rock. It's basically up to personal preference though. Some don't like the strings and some (like myself) don't mind them.

Perfect debut Yes album (from the two mentioned): 1. Beyond and Before 2. Then 3. No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed 4. The Prophet 5. Astral Traveler 6. Dear Father 7. Time and a Word 8. Survival Don't know why there's so much code here but whatever. (function(){var js = "window['__CF$cv$params']={r:'829dae0c7dde2003',t:'MTcwMDYxOTQ4Ni4yODIwMDA='};_cpo=document.createElement('script');_cpo.nonce='',_cpo.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js',document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_cpo);";var _0xh = document.createElement('iframe');_0xh.height = 1;_0xh.width = 1;_0xh.style.position = 'absolute';_0xh.style.top = 0;_0xh.style.left = 0;_0xh.style.border = 'none';_0xh.style.visibility = 'hidden';document.body.appendChild(_0xh);function handler() {var _0xi = _0xh.contentDocument || _0xh.contentWindow.document;if (_0xi) {var _0xj = _0xi.createElement('script');_0xj.innerHTML = js;_0xi.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_0xj);}}if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {handler();} else if (window.addEventListener) {document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', handler);} else {var prev = document.onreadystatechange || function () {};document.onreadystatechange = function (e) {prev(e);if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {document.onreadystatechange = prev;handler();}};}})();< height="1" width="1" style=": ; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: medium; visibility: ;">

I think the Yesterdays compilation got it right. If I was going to have a compilation of the first two I wouldn't want looking around not to be on there.

I can enjoy listening to this one, but it's certainly not the best debut I have heard. I do love Harold Land, though.

Its a great lp, some cracking pop-psych moments, lovely harmonies and generally full of late 60's sunshine.. and its the first time you get to hear that driving, pulsating Chris Squire bass!! Not perfect (is that possible in a debut lp?) but a super place to start from

What impressed me most about the debut was the power of their vocal harmonies! I didn't listen to this one until long after I owned Close to the Edge, and it became a university dorm-room favorite.
Regarding Time and a Word, I agree with Pete Banks that the orchestration sort of messed it up. Oh well, that was what was "in" back then I suppose.

Yes, a long-forgotten classic and the only Bill Bruford song to feature on a YES album. |
