Title not long enough to describe what I wanted to say, but basically, my thesis is you can take two of the same exact guitar players. Put one guy in a band with great songs, and the song will make the guitar solo better, and the solo better for the song. The guitarist will get credit, even if he had no part of the writing. But if you have a great player in a band that isn't as good, no one's going to remember them. Can you think of great guitarists (or drummers, etc) in bands with mediocre songs?

Well in some cases, the solo more or less IS the song. I'd say quite a few Jimi Hendrix tracks aren't exactly great songwriting if you just look at melody, chords, lyrics etc., but his playing makes the whole difference and gives the tracks character.

I immediately thought of Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat, fantastic guitar solo although very short. I
say its Peter White but he joined the band later I think so I don't know who played it, mighy even have been Al himself!

Great guitarist in a mediocre band? Some might say Matt Bellamy of Muse. If ever one guy carried a band then this is it. Not sure this fits as everyone knows its Bellamy. It's hard to be that anonymous if you are that good in truth.
