Thanks to a comment by one of our members comparing Swans The Seer (2012) with Big Country's The Seer (1986), I started exploring Big Country. I thought it might make the most sense if comparing the actual music to look at contemporaneous music with similar music qualities.
In 1991, Big Country released the album No Place Like Home which has folk rock and country qualities. Swans released White Light From the Mouth of Infinity in 1991 which has neofolk and country qualities. They both released another album in the early 1990s that also would work for this poll, Swans with Love of Life (1992) and Big Country with The Buffalo Skinners in 1993. I wanted this to be a variety of bands that have folk qualities of the early 90s, so I will include two favourites of mine with Dead Can Dance and Current 93, but I want to go outside my usual wheelhouse to include some more so it is not a very repetitive kind of topic of mine (Dead Can Dance and Current 93 have been staples of various topics I have made, and the very excellent Current 93 related Nature and Organisation has been in topics of mine after it was suggested by Gordy for Prog Related). I want to do tracks so people can check music out. They don't have to. I based these songs on what I thought worked for the theme and was interesting, and for some contrast. I was going to do just six pairs, but I love N&O and that cover, so I included it. I thought about Enya, have many of her albums, but she just has the one applicable studio album and my clear favourite from it is not very folk. You might not like my choices, but I thought these work quite well for the theme and playlist. Big Country - Beat the Devil (No Place Like Home, 1991) Big Country - Winding Wind (The Buffalo Skinners, 1993) Current 93 - Hitler As Kalki (SDM) (Thunder Perfect Mind, 1992) Current 93 - The Teeth of the Winds of the Sea (Of Ruine or Some Blazing Starre, 1994) Dead Can Dance - Black Sun (Aion, 1990) Dead Can Dance - The Carnival Is Over (Into the Labyrinth, 1993) John Frusciante - 23 Go In to End (Shadows Collide With People, 1994) John Frusciante - The Will to Death (The Will to Death, 1994) Loreena McKennitt - The Lady of Shalott (The Visit, 1991) Loreena McKennitt - The Mystic's Dream (The Mask and Mirror, 1994) Nature and Organisation - Wicker Man Song (Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude, 1994)* Swans - Love Will Save You (White Light From the Mouth of Infinity, 1991) Swans - The Other Side of the World (Love of Life, 1992) Wicker Man Song is a cover, but it's a cover of one of my all-time favourite songs, and an excellent one to boot, I think. While the Dead Can Dance, Swans Current 93 and Nature and Organisation albums have all received multiple spins from me I was not as familiar with the John Frusciante music, and I love those. Loreena McKennitt is great but, and maybe I did not spend time thinking about my choices, it doesn't connect with me as much those others. I like various things I heard from Big Country's first two albums as I explored the discography due to a comment on Swans' The Seer "It's an insult to the brilliant album by Big Country which shares the same name, and I feel the same about everything else by them I've heard. Not actually unpleasant, just totally boring and uninteresting", but sadly, I find most of what I heard from Big Country, including music from the Seer to sound quite derivative/ generic and dull. Still glad to have checked out music by Big Country and to expand my horizons a bit with more music even if I did not find the music that mind-expanding or revelatory. I bet I could have chosen "better" pieces, but I started with that and musically it fit my vision for this poll at first. Feel free to share any other music. I have not enable multiple votes, maybe I will later, but it would be great to hear about more than one you like. No requirement to listen to vote (13 is a lot to go through and some of these are quite long), but here is the playlist for the music. I don;t expect much interest, and that;s okay as I do enjoy the thought process and reviewing of material that goes into these. The fun is in the conception and the making even if the result is not deemed very good. Still, I hope this can be a mostly positive experience. :) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4LezcfbxaS12Ly4Vie9zcKR Edited by Logan - August 24 2023 at 17:15 |

Sorry for double-posting. As said, one does not need to listen through the playlist to vote. I should have thought to suggest at the time of posting that one suggest their own choice of track off any of these albums. For instance, I chose the Big Country tracks, which I actually dislike, because I wanted to compare those to Swans tracks with some similar countryish folk vibes. Big Country are Scottish, but damned if it does not sound American and like total Americana to my ears on that album (and they have American themes running though those albums).
That first John Frusciante track I posted is not folk, but the album has folk qualities, and I just damn well love it! The second of his does present another side, can even hear the lyrics paper being turned over. It's a simple and lovely song to me a la Red Hot Chile Peppers (of which he was a member). While I had heard music of his, I found this by doing a search, and I now have love delving into his music (worth making this poll for me for that). Hitler Is Kalki is to me such a trip, I know David Tibet's vocals would not be to most tastes, and I don;t always appreciate them. I do find listening to the word in a song like The Teeth of the Winds of the Sea to be interesting. He is an unusual person. Nice to see Dead Can Dance's Black Sun with a vote, although I must admit that I am a little sad that whomever that was decided against posting. The joy of this site is in connecting with people here and sharing our common interests and exploring each other's interests, at least for me in large part. If I respond back, and I do that partially as courtesy and to show my appreciation in topics as I hope to be responded to when I post in other people's topics, and sometimes just to joke around or offer a different perspective or come up with a different strategy for comparison like with the impetus for this poll. Anyway, I have tended to favour the first four DCD albums, but especially since Paul's DCD topic where we list albums and songs (my kind of topic as we can share, explore and discuss each other's specific and more general favourites) I got to really appreciate Aion and Into The Labyrinth and I love these songs. Black Moon was not even my choice in his topic but I went back and this song's brilliance hit me really hard. My favourite topics often do get me exploring discographies more and reevaluating music. People here who know me know my tastes quite well know that I am fan of The Wicker Man (both the original film and its soundtrack) so it was hard to resist posting this version of a song used in it. As for the Swans, which perhaps has got to much attention from me at this forum, I have various tracks I especially appreciate from White Light, and that quite upbeat one was partially because I thought it would work fairly well against Big Country, And with Love of Life which I have not listened to nearly as much, It was so good, I think, to do a Jarboe one (that period of Swans is Michael and Jarboe, and I think that was a very special time for Swans and this the period for which I often recommend to people who think they hate Swans for certain qualities found in the earliest albums and in The Seer and the like). I see Loreena has a vote, and I have not become very familiar with her music despite her being such a big name that I have known of and heard some music by for 30 years or so. I remember Ken here being an admirer as well as some other posters. Beautiful voice but I'm not that into the Celtic kind of new agey scene any more (I used to love Clannad and Enya when I was in my late teens and early 20s, but my tastes shifted). And I'm happy to hear about other folk or folk-related albums of the time. Please suggest some "better" choices for 1990 to 1994 both from the albums that are represented and from the period. Thanks to all who take the time to consider the choices if they respond or not. It sincerely is appreciated. PA forum members can be a very affable bunch and that means a lot to me. And I know how much effort it can be to respond to such topics (I spent well over an hour on someone's poll listening and commenting the other day) so any effort is super appreciated and listening though is not expected for ones with many choices like this (in this case I would not, in full, just listen to enough of each to see if it appeals, and then listen to those that do seem to appeal properly when possible, but we all have no shortage of music to listen to I assume). Voted John Frusciante - The Will to Death. I've heard some of his albums, but not this one. If this song is any indication of the whole, I'll surely have to check it out. I've liked most of what I've heard from him. Niandra LaDes etc. album is captivating and horrible and difficult to listen to, and comes highly recommended. I've always thought Frusciante was the talented and visionary one in the RHCP.
I listened to at least a bit of all the other tracks as well. C93 and Swans I knew already (but hadn't heard them since ages). Sorry to say none of them did much for me.

^ Thanks very much Hiram, it is greatly appreciated (and I really like reading so many of your posts). The Big Country tracks/albums here are quite antithetical to my tastes ultimately and Loreena McKennitt doesn't really interest me here, but all the others are liked/loved by me. John Frusciante was my big take-away from doing this as I knew too little of him (I love various RHCP) but came across his name for these albums with some minor research and I love this music! He's my player of the poll and putting this together was well-worth it for the discovery. I will be looking into more of his music.
