Because it is!

Prelude:

And then of course "la pièce de résistance", which means "you cannot resist this piece", because it is original, minimalist, absurd, socially and politically committed and just a masterpiece of inventive prog:

And Steve Hackett also likes it very much!

And you?

And it inspired this very avant-gard(ish) 8-bit version:

It also gave Mike Rutherford a chance to play drums live...

I've never really had a problem with the song. I like it better than the last two tracks of the Abacab album. But I'm weird. So there's that.

The only reason this song is hated so much on this site is because it's so unabashedly DIFFERENT from anything else the band had ever done before: the gated-reverb drums, the heavily synthesized sound, repetitive nonsense lyrics, etc.

I would have loved for Fripp/Belew/Levin/Bruford to cover this song (much more guitar-oriented, natch)!

People dislike it (myself included) because of the " repetitive nonsense lyrics", but the song is annoyingly repetitive musically as well. 😞

Hehe, yes, and I can understand that, but they're actually the reasons why I like it so much: the repetition is quite effective and I like the nonsense of the lyrics. With the pumpy-thumpy synths and the tight rhythm this becomes almost a dadaist piece of music. And what I hear too, and which is so much lacking in prog (imho), is the sheer fun and joy and spontaneity they had in creating and playing this. Unconventional, uncompromising and especially way out of the prog canon and even - or especially - outside the Genesis canon.

It is a fun track, but it's also annoying.

I dislike it more because of Collins antics. He could be an overgrown child at times such as the very not needed whistling on the Genesis live version of The Knife and also the stupid mockney voices on Battle Of Epping Forest. I could also add Robbery, Assault and Battery as being the weakest track on ATOTT although that's not as bad! Say It's Alright Joe also rubs a lot up of people up the wrong way although I don't mind that one so much either.

It has the same problem as a lot of prog --- it's too long! They ran out of ideas. Clearly stretched out. It should only be a fraction of its length.
