As we are witnessing a renaissance of neo-medieval prog with authentic masterpieces, let's put them all together and discuss them in the same thread.

Cool thread! Keep it going, people!

Ill Wicker and Faun both fall into the fringes--not as wild and crazed as Comus or Spirogyra, but great modern stuff.

Also worth checking out Hugsja by Ivar Bjørnson and Einar Solvik --Viking Prog Folk at its finest!

For some older neo-medieval releases, lots on the Prog Folk side that I like. There are classics like Gryphon (say Midnight Mushrumps) and Amazing Blondel and rather more recent ones like Dead Can Dance. I might recommend the album Aion but it's from 1990 and lacking in some other qualities you want imo. I think a lot of my favourites would be more on the Neoclassical Darkwave and folk side, and not really neurotic, or really twisted (Dead can Dance does have some of that) I'm sure there would be plenty of more contemporary ones on the Black Metal side (and there is Dungen Synth).

Faun, already mentioned, is one that I would have mentioned (say the album Pagan) even if not that neurotic....

Here is Daniel Gillett's Moorland from 2017 (not in PA apparently) and not neurotic (actually, it kind of is):

Some Current 93 could work, but the more suitable C93 I can think of is from the 90s. I figure black midi could do a great neo-medieval album that would fit the bill.

This is not quite what I think you want, but fits the bill the best for me from what I can think of for modern music (other than maybe some modern Current 93): La Tène & Jacques Puech et Louis Jacques & Jérémie Sauvage et Guilhem Lacroux - Abandonnée/Maléja

As I love, Comus, I'm really enjoying Ill Wicker. Thanks for the recommendations, BrufordFreak and Logan. I will be listening to them all one by one.

Not every single aspect of the title must be met, it is only a broad way of alluding to some sensibility.

For example, this only very remotely fits in the description, but it certainly evokes to me that nervous ancient paranoia that I can find in something like Comus.

Faun sounds much more accurate historically (at least Buch der Balladen does, the album that I played), almost going the Jordi Savall route.

I realized that I already listened to Hugsjá. I listened quite a bit of Viking folk and dark folk not long ago. Good stuff.

Moorland by Daniel Gillett sounds like an hybrid between Walter Carlos and this:

The "outsider music" tag is certainly accurate. What a peculiar mix of styles. When the surf rock popped out I was left astonished.

It also made me think of this band:
