Top 500 Prog Metal Tracks (based on RYM ratings)

Like I previously promised in the first thread of this I made on top 300 Classic Prog tracks according to RYM ratings, here is the top prog-metal songs of all time. It is 200 tracks longer than the classic prog list because of the abundance of tracks that fulfil the criteria for being included - it must have an average rating of at least 4.10 and 40 votes. With RYM paying far more attention to metal releases in the last three decades in contrast to non-metal prog of the same period, this makes for a longer list, even though there are no compositions with ratings really towering above the rest like King Crimson and Pink Floyd had in the original.

To make the list, I checked the RYM ratings of every artist in the three prog-metal sections on PA (Progressive Metal / Experimental/Post Metal / Tech/Extreme Prog Metal) to see if they match my requirements. I relied entirely on what we consider to be prog, opting against the inclusion of the likes of Amorphis and Dir en Grey, that many others would classify as Progressive Metal and that RYM often lists as such. The list features only two artists not found in the three sections cited above - Haken (prog-metal is another possible classification just as valid as 'heavy prog', I found) and Kayo Dot (prog-metal definitely fits the first two albums, as well as Hubardo and their latest release as of this post, not represented on the list due to lower ratings). Kayo Dot's inclusion led to them taking the third position with their best-known composition, which is significant enough to mention. I decided against including Mr. Bungle in any shape or form, unconvinced the metal component is prominent enough to justify that decision. Working on the list also showed me that some artists acknowledged on RYM don't appear on our site and could use an examination by the present genre teams (Today Is the Day, Atvm, Murmuüre or Scar Symmetry, to name a few). 

Once again, it can be pointed out, no matter how obvious the fact is, that the RYM community rates certain things higher than others, and the ratings only reflect that particular community's opinions. Though an opportunity is given to lesser-known acts to compete with the juggernauts of the genre due to rating count not being a factor, it remains true that a band needs to be known for their track to be rated at least forty times and generally lesser-known artists don't get very high ratings, either.

I believe this list is no less interesting than the other one I made, featuring a great variety of artists (largely owing to the inclusive nature of ProgArchives in the last years giving way to many wildly different performers in the metal genre). There may be discoveries to be made here for newer listeners, food for thought and study for genre fans and curious information to check and compare.

Seeing Rhapsody (of Fire) in the top 20 was a real surprise. I love the band, but honestly I'm quite surprised.

I'm more into the "traditional" prog metal bands. Here is mostly "modern" oriented.

I cannot say that I liked the list that much.

I'm thoroughly impressed with the variety in the list personally. You've got traditional and classic metal, death and black, post-metal and atmospheric sludge, groove, metalcore, avant-garde, djent, math, doom, gothic, power, viking, blackgaze and DSBM - all in one diverse list, where they are united by sharing progressive ambition. Many of them were recorded a sufficiently long time ago to be considered classics in their styles. 

It's true that the list fails to include much of Fates Warning's work, and Psychotic Waltz, Shadow Gallery or King's X are entirely left out. So are many others with insufficient ratings or vote numbers. It does leave the impression that the people who enjoyed the music of these bands abandoned the website altogether, their voice no longer represented. 

I imagine the list must be quite upsetting to fans of traditional progressive metal in general, with the first Dream Theater song (arguably one of their two best songs) appearing only on the 40th position, and the bands most loved on this site being similarly mixed with others not in their favour.

I don't agree with this list, especially with DEP at the very top. That song is good, but not a great representation of prog metal.

Interesting to see Dream Theater- A Change Of Seasons higher than anything else by them . I concur, it's definitely a masterpiece. 
Tool featuring high is not surprising, Lateralus certainly shook things up. 
Anathema - didn't realise they were 'prog metal'?! However Weather Systems is one of my all time favourite albums so pleased to see any recognition for it anywhere.

ACOS is my favourite DT epic, too, though I expected it would be beaten by Octavarium, which has always seemed to be favoured by the community more.

Well, Anathema are listed as Experimental/Post-Metal on PA, so no liberties taken on my part here. Kayo Dot, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Haken were added on my initiative however, but Mr Bungle and Ulver were not. Even later era KC is tagged as progmetal on RYM.

To me its expanding/stretching the idea and the definition of 'metal'. I can easily associate DT and Tool with the genre but there is a lot of stuff that has little to do with it according to my ears!

I for one, don't set a great deal of store by PA's genre categories. In the case of Anathema, we all know that they haven't released anything 'metal' since Eternity, with Alt 4 a borderline case. It's the same with describing Mostly Autumn as Prog Folk... the first 2 or 3, maybe, but after that?
