Topic: Me, music, ect Posted: July 23 2004 at 23:57 |
well i wasn't sure where to put a little intro about
myself so i thought i would do it here. my name is
D'Arcy and i am a friend of Bryan Adair's. he didn't
really get me into prog-rock but he made me give it a
chance. and i find that i am drawn towards the
louder, faster groups. i tend to like the things that are
labeled as post-punk or post-rock. some examples
are explosions in the sky, mogwai (though not so
much), mars volta, godseed you black emporer!.
though i'm not a huge fan of those groups, i am open
to more. the type of music that i mainly listen to is
punkrock (nofx, anti-flag, propgandhi, dropkick
murphys) and ska (the specials, the slackers, chris
murray, the kinpins). though lately i have been
wanting to expand. so any suggestions for bands
that have a very strong rock feel to them would be
nice.
i do have a few prog-rock records though, i hae
about 6 pink floyd albums (darkside, wall, wish you
were here, animals, pulse, division bell). and a
couple yes ones.
(relayer, 90215) and one rush album (i forget wich
one, some 90's one)

Hi Asmua, welcome to the site.
It's hard to make recomendations as taste is of course unique to each of us. Have you tried Dream Theater? It soulds like they may be of interest to you. Other than that, I would suggest you read the album reviews, an see which ones describe the type of music you mght enjoy. If you click on the "Prog rock?" button at the top of the archives page, you'll see soem good descriptions of the various sub-gendres, and links to some of the better know bands for each.

Haha, I see your boredom got the best of you, eh D'Arcy?
As he mentioned in his post, asuma is a friend of mine in real life. I don't know what the heck he's doing here, but whatever...

He won't leave NOFX. In fact, just the other day, he purchased a Crass t-shirt. *cringes*

If you find DREAM THEATER (which is a good suggestion) too metallic, try SPOCK'S BEARD. And if you like the FLOYD you own, try PORCUPINE TREE (start with "Signify" or "In Absentia").
For what it's worth...

Don't let the anti-punk population on this forum bring you down- some of us actually think punk and prog can live together in peace and harmony ![](smileys/smiley36.gif) ![](smileys/smiley7.gif)
I would have suggested The Mars Volta, GYBE, and Mogwai but I see you already found 'em. Maybe mid-70s King Crimson might be a good thing to check out- Red, Starless and Bible Black, and Lark's Tongues in Aspic are pretty gritty and raw in places. You might end up really getting into Zappa, too- at least three of my hardcore punk friends think he's great. Definitely check out Mr. Bungle if you haven't already- they're a perfect bridge between punk and Zappa.
Have you listened to any Sonic Youth? I know they're not prog but Daydream Nation is pretty trippy and punk-influenced at the same time. Ska doesn't get real progressive but Fishbone is just as adventurous (plus they're incredible musicians, equal to most prog or fusion players out there).
BTW- I own a Crass T-shirt too, UI ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)

i have heard some king crimson, and i do like it. not
my favorite so far but it's pretty cool stuff. i have heard
zappa before and for some reason it just doesn't
click with me. i don't know what it is about him, but it
just doesn't work for me, but he does have a lot of
records so i might as well try some others. perhaps i
will check out MR. bungle, any rec's there? i have
heard plenty of sonic youth and i am a fan of them.
fishbone: i own two of the albums and i do think they
are a really good group.
as for prog, ska, punk. i'm in a band with some
people and we are trying to do some genre bending,
it's pretty hard but so far we can tell it is going to be
worth it. he have done a cover of heroin by the velvet
underground. we play it ska style, then near the end
go into some sort of crazy noise jam. and we just
finished writting a new song today that features
distorted radio noises and such. when we get some
mp3's i will put them on the site.

You might like Mr. Bungle. They're the slightly less insane side of Mike Patton (the singer from Fantomas).
