happy to see so many LDN scene acts, but somewhat a bit sad not to see more Gondwanna label artistes (GGP is the only one listed)

Portico Quartet are Gondwanna, aren't they?
They are. As are Mammal Hands. 👍🏻
Correct, I've got Gogo Penguin, Mammal Hands & Portico Quartet from Gondwanna in the poll. Great label.

my bad! Embarrassed I missed Mammal Hands in your list and indeed Portico is a late Gondwana recruit.

But Gondwanna was started by Matthew Hallsall (mostly) and Nat Birchall (he since moved to Jazzman label a while ago)

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I only know Sons Of Kemet from the list but they're absolutely great! Two drummers and extensive use of tuba as central instrument.

The sax player in Sons Of Kemet, Shabaka Hutchins, is also in The Comet Is Coming and Shabaka & The Ancestors, both highly recommended.

I saw Sons Of Kemet at the Big Ears Festival two years ago, superb and loads of fun.

Been digging all these bands for a while in the nu jazz scene. Who do you like?

I deliberately left off bands who are on PA.

Please post comments

Stellar list like you I’ve been listening to the nu-jazz music for some time now!

it’s interesting to see how much Shabaka seems to be taking the lead here. All three of the bands he plays a large part in are out front. Hopefully this doesn’t mean people aren’t exploring some of the other artists in the list. There’s so much good stuff in this scene. ❤️🥰
