Rodrigo San Martin releases Arcana (Act 1), first progressive rock album mixed with 8D Audio.

The sixth record of the argentine musician, released on November 2020, is the first progressive rock album to feature this new production technique that provides Surround sound for headphones.

“Arcana (Act 1)” is a concept album composed and recorded in isolation that narrates music’s history and it’s relation to humanity. It breaks the usual limits of rock records by drawing influence from Folk and Traditional music from around the world (such as Early music from Sumer, Japan,  pre-Columbian America, Scandinavia, Mongolia and others), as well as Classical and Medieval music. All without losing its rock essence.

From the very beginning, the album was created around the 8D Audio concept: This new mixing technique allows the music to have a Surround effect designed for headphones. Unlike Stereo, where there are only two audio channels (left and right), in 8D Audio the sound comes not only from the sides, but also from the front and back, and up and down, providing a complete 360 ° audio experience.

Rodrigo San Martín (Buenos Aires, 1988) is an argentine multi-instrumental Progressive Rock musician. His first encounter with surround sound was with “1”, his debut record in 2010. It’s the first Latin-American  album mixed in 5.1 surround.

His five solo albums has been greatly recognized by the international specialised press, as well as his involvement with the bands:  Vanished from Earth and Souls Ignite. Nowadays, he is the leader of The Astral Platypus, an audiovisual project that is a parody of Progressive Rock. The project includes a comedy web series that narrates the story of a fictional  band between the 60´s and 80´s, and the complete discography of said band.

Rodrigo is considered one of the main figures Argentina’s progressive rock’s revival, since he is the founding member and leader of La Resistencia Progresiva Argentina: a group of progressive bands, with whom he works with in different projects to promote the genre. One of these initiatives is the Baires Prog Fest, a music festival in Buenos Aires, which has already had fifteen editions.

Why the hell is it considered 8D and not 3D? I love this, lol!

Thanks!

I'm with you on this one; I think the company that named it "8D Audio" instead of "360 Audio" or "3D Audio" wanted a more marketeable name.  It causes regular discussions because there aren't 8 dimensions, but they say it was named this way because "audio comes from 8 directions".

But yes, you're completely right: 3D Audio would be a more appropiate name.

> audio comes from 8 directions

I can only find 6 - left/right, up/down, front/back.

I'm not buying into the marketing nonsense.

The name's not that important, MoebiusStreet. It's surround sound for headphones.
