Two very different things to compare (I kept saying poll, but it's not, I edited this twice LOL)

I do enjoy listening to Steely Dan from time to time.

Beefheart is one of those you love or hate. I have heard anybody saying his music indifferent. And also I think before I got into prog I wouldnīt also understand Beefheart. But some years after prog I just so started to love him!!

It might take a certain eccentricity to appreciate Beefheart. I've always had an appreciation for the quirky being quite a quirky person myself.

I really like Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's Safe as Milk, and never got as into any Steely Dan album.

Thumbs Up That's a bit more accessible. Not sure I like it but I certainly don't hate it.

When is comes to what is and what isn't a prog band we have differences.  Some us are very narrow and others are more broad in what is acceptable.  I accept them as prog and in the genres they were placed.  Anyway, Steely Dan maybe narrowly over Beefheart. I am not a fan of Trout Mask and hence why SD beats him out for me.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I do think some of his albums are too esoteric....those who rave about Trout Mask must have been a bit wasted when they first heard it.
Wink
ps...please don't throw any trout masks at me...
Clear Spot was also my first Beefheart album. I think itīs good starter together with Safe as Milk. I am really into Trout, Lick, Doc and Icecream, also Strictly Personal is my big faves. Anyway even those most bizarre Beefheart albums there are a blues base, so if you donīt like blues at all, you probably donīt also like Beefheart. To me blues is quite basic tone that is someway almost every music I love.

Although itīs quite same to me whatīs prog and whatīs not (I just love great music whatever it is), never thought Beefheart as prog. Really hard to say what Beefheart is, he was totally his own, I donīt think there was anything like him before him, very little after him have also been artists like him, although for example the Birthday Party, the Pop Group, Pere Ubu, Minutemen, John Parish, P J Harvey, Trumans Water & Thinking Fellers Union Local 292 were influenced by him.

Nah, TMR is just a pinnacle of human abstract expressionism. People have a hard time accepting it as anything except a record. It transcends that for me. It's the highest form of abstraction, that just also happens to be caught on tape Cool.

Clear Spot rules. Spotlight Kid rules. Lick My Decals Off, Baby rules. Beefheart rules.

Hi,

I have funny/weird ideas sometimes ... but for me, "serious" music is always better than stuff that is mostly designed to get attention ... from the youngsters.

The Captain, was not one for the hordes of teenagers, smoking a pipe to show that they had grown up ... and his music reflected his feelings. That's not to say that SD's doesn't, but in my eyes, through my glasses (3 right eye operations - one open eye surgery!), it is a bit tainted to be hip and sometimes funny, and get attention, rather than being ... more serious otherwise, specially in the lyrics. I won't disagree that the musicianship in SD is not good, it's VERY GOOD ... and deserves some great kudos, but the general outlook, specially in The Strip ... was that it was "hip" man ... really "hip" ... and folks did not go around saying that about the Captain!

And you couldn't get a ticket to see SD when they were in town ... you could get all kinds of good tickets for the Captain!

PS: I never saw a single poster of the Captain at Tower Records on the Strip in almost 30 years ... but I am not sure I can even count how many SD posters they had on their windows several times, and at least once, in 3 windows in a row!

Hi,

You are hereby banned from quoting second rate stuff and will be locked up reading Burroughs and THE NAKED LUNCH for a couple of weeks!

Maybe a second course of Jean Genet after it for dessert! TongueWink

Hi,

Just weird hearing stuff that was inspired by Burroughs (specially the band's name!) and then is quoted because SD is loved and Burroughs is some sh*t no one has ever heard of before in the progressive music archives!

I keep thinking that these folks don't even know that "steely dan" was a DILDOE!

PS: AND a band named that these days would incur such a rage that it would be "banned" and removed from distribution by a certain ... something right or other!
