Yep, I can say that the first season was quite plausible. It was of course in the scope of "temporary suspension of disbelief", yet that doesn't mean a fiction can't be realistic. I just didn't like its ending, for a specific reason (for me, a flaw and fail) in its ending. ı cannot vividly -or better, exactly and in full detail- remember, even if I did I would send you a PM to abstain from giving spoilers. It can be seen as an unwise move by a wise character, on the other hand. Maybe I was too judgemental.

No problem, I've talked with a few at the forum when season two was on, or seen after it ended, and I seemed to be the only one who liked it. It was the same with another favourite of mine from around that time, The French supernatural drama Les Revenants (The Returned). I've seen the first season of Utopia a couple of times, not in quite a few years, and I plan to re-watch season two at some time. It feels quite relevant to what's going on today, and my long-time concern with overpopulation. It didn't stick with me as much as the first season of Utopia did (it can be a very brutal show for those who might want to look into it).
EDIT: There'a an episode of Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams with Steve Buscemi (Crazy Diamond, named after Syd Barrett) that has a similar aesthetic and sound -- a director (he directed half of the two series, including the first three brilliant episodes and three from series two) and the composer from Utopia did the original music. Many didn't really like season two of Utopia, but I did, especially the first episode. I was upset that it got cancelled and there wasn't a season three. It was a bit disappointing that it didn't get a proper ending as I recall. That said, I don't recall having much of a problem with the ending of season one. I may be quite a forgiving viewer, and don't mind a little suspension of disbelief (I loved the whole feel of season one). |

I love Duran Duran's RIO and R.I.O. (Rock in Opposition). I would have liked to hear Univers Zero do a chamber rock cover of Duran Duran's RIO. I love all of the core R.I.O. bands and a lot of later RIO festivals and related "avant prog" bands. "Chamber rock" is a favourite of mine. Sorry it has taken me way too long to reply life got in the way. I am well familiar with 3 of the recordings you mentioned,and also know of FF from Henry Cow and John Zorn ,however I have not heard the album so I will seek it out on your recommendation.The album by Sammy's Mamma is a monster and completely forgot about this group I do have it on vinyl and probably been years since I heard it.It makes me remember why I love this genre of music so .This past week my grand daughter gave me a copy of a band called Naked Truth Ouroboros, I checked it out on this site and it is listed as a RIO band,not so sure about that sounds a bit like David Torn-Jon Hassel with a pinch of Miles Davis in the mix,but I can say is this sounds incredible on headphones sitting next to a wood stove in the middle of the night no other sounds except the dogs snoring and the fire crackling.I will have to have a talk with her about music next time they come and visit us.

A Thanks for the tips.I have the Samla Mammas Manna album Maltid this is a favorite recording of mine and it encompasses all that I like about this catagory-genre of RIO just wish I understood Swedish.Also am a fan of the keyboard player Lars Hollmer who surprises me on every song dam I miss his playing.
The Slap Happy album you speak of I have heard that but it has been years maybe a few decades,so it would be unfair of me to comment I should think it's time to check it out again.

But seriously, I love lots of Rock in Opposition music (Art Zoyd is my particular favourite overall). R.I.O, and R.I.O. related acts used to get more attention at Prog Archives, so much so that it's been claimed that it drove some of the more traditional Proggers away from the site. |
