Firstly, I need to excuse myself here for surely I am not the first one to think of this idea. Navigating the Forum pages however -on related discussions - is nothing short of a nightmare...

So here we go. I would imagine a link where members could trade LPs, CDs, DVDs, etc. This would largely represent used items and not to be a venue for Mail-Order Businesses, many of which are already accessable through the Archives.

^^ nice idea, but I think that most of us either use ebay or amazon....

personally, if I decided to get shot of something, I would feel embarrassed about using this site, because I'd be getting pms from people saying "WTF are you getting rid of that for man?  It's damn cool...give it a few more listens...." when all I'd want to do it sell the damn thing...

Yeah, you're right there! Also it would be a lot of work and not really worth it when e-bay's around.

How about a section where you could link your prog related auctions?

^ My usual status!

These are just ideas, and the resources have to be ditrected to vital areas. Where this isn't, at least now.

Check out the parallel thread on If.  Somebody looking for If on vinyl - and 6 weeks ago I sold a chunk of my brother's prog collection, at 3 to 6 pound per LP, and now see threeof those If albums sold, being  advertised on web at 20 to 25 quid.  In the circumstances, I would have much preferred to sell direct without the middleman taking so much profit.

So we have to overcome the "embarrassment", because chances somebody out there will have some interest in what you have to offer. Besides vinyl isn't sacrosanct to me: not  something to lock qway in a museum still in its original cellophane wrapping - it was intended to be played, and played it has been, until I find a better recording.

In the meanwhile I still have ~30  albums left from my brother's clear-out for sale, including Patrick Moraz, Mike Oldfield, Kansas, Genesis, Yes,  and Alan White's first solo...............

I created a thread about Ebay auctions two months ago, and it died a slow (but peaceful) death ... unless someone resurrects it.

Great idea. There is "Trades" page on Progressive Ears and it functions OK. I did several successful trades over there (and a couple of not so successful ones ).

^^ Hi Dick,

I appreciate what you are saying.  I think the embarrassment factor isn't there because a) you are selling for your brother (well, I guess we can all take heed and invent ourselves brothers!) and b) Disposing of LPs is a more reasonable reason for the break up of a collection, than clearing out recently bought CDs.

Personally, I will stick with my above argument.  If I tried a band (eg Anekdoten) and decided after a couple of purchases that they weren't for me, I'm convinced that their fans would be put out and tell me I hadn't given them long enough...that they's grow on me..etc.  No thanks.

PS...I'm not thinking of getting rid of my Anekdoten btw!!

Why not, I'm willing to trade a Styx album for it (not that I actually have a styx album of course)

Anekdoten for Styx sounds like a very fair trade....

I've got some old Abba Lps if you're interested, Tuxy!
