Nice to see a thread about Maiden here! Smile Well, Paul may not be the greatest singer Maiden ever had, but my favourite album by them happens to be ''Killers'', and my favourite song ''Phantom of the Opera''. Paul had a very distinctive voice that worked perfectly for the early material. ''Murders in the Rue Morgue'', ''Remember Tomorrow'', ''Transylvania'', ''Genghis Khan'', ''Strange World'', ''Purgatory''... Oh man, too many great songs! For some reason, I always thought the guitar riffs were a lot more creative, technical and diverse on these first two albums, and let's not forget the unbelievable drumwork by Clive Burr! Seriously, that man was a machine, much better than Nicko (who's no slouch himself Wink)... I also really like their stuff with Blaze, especially The X Factor, a really, really fine album! I wish people would listen to the non-Bruce albums more, and give them the credit they deserve! But of course, the Bruce era has its fair share of masterpieces, "Somewhere In Time'' being my personal favorite. I can totally see why he is the most popular as a frontman, as he is a superb singer and such a nice guy too. Paul, on the other hand... Doesn't really look like the kind of guy you'd enjoy being around too much, especially these days. But he was very talented, no doubt. Di'Anno Maiden!!! \m/ Cool \m/

Dickinson is my favorite Maiden vocalist, but I love Di'Anno and I like Bayley well enough, too.

The first two albums, the self-titled and Killers, the two with Di'Anno on vocals, are my favorite Maiden albums, though.  Not just because of Di'Anno, obviously (since I like Dickinson more), but I just like the tunes and the vibe on them more than anything else they did.

I love them overall, but after the two Di'Anno albums, the next three, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave, would round out my top five.  A couple of the 90s albums, especially, were relatively weak, but they haven't done an album I don't enjoy.

Their career path and their quality arc reminds me a lot of both Saxon and Motorhead, two other NWOBHM bands I love overall.

I couldn't care less about any moral or character flaws any artist might have, by the way.  That has zero impact on my opinion of their work.  I don't judge Adolf Hitler's paintings any differently just because he was Hitler.  I wouldn't judge anyone's work any differently even if they'd committed crimes against me or my family.

What puzzles in the game of the comparison between Di'Anno and Dickinson is that, while the songs of the 2 first LPs are written by the same composers of the rest of the repertoire, it sounds like it was written for the voice of Di'Anno: each time I hear Dickinson's take on "Iron Maiden" (the song), it doesn't sound as... adequate as the Di'Anno version.

It reminds me that I really, really should go and listen to Life After Death to have a better "view" on the differences of the two voices...
