... what lengths would/do you go to support your favourite bands?? For example take Marillion who .... ... realised that the Internet provided an ideal opportunity to nurture a closer contact with the fans, and a fan instigated whip round on their e-mailing list produced enough funds to allow the band to tour the USA. The release of the album ‘Marillion.com’ in 1999 flagged their newly launched web-site and record label but it was the revolutionary concept of asking their fans to pre-order and pay for the recording costs an album some 12 months in advance of its release that hit the headlines in 2001. Astonishingly, over 12,000 of their fans pre-ordered and an additional deal was struck with EMI to market the resulting ‘Anoraknophobia’ album. A similar campaign was also launched to fund the band’s latest release, ‘Marbles’ but this time all the money raised is going into a campaign fund to promote the album. In terms of fan loyalty, it can be said that Marillion have an international underground following to rival the mainstream (http://www.marillion.com/band/biog.html) and some would say (like myself) lucky for us So ...

1. Seems appropriate.
2. Any who I hold respect for. 3. This seems the way of the future. The internet is the greatest direct marketing tool ever. This however should also provide a cheaper product- especially if the songs are downloaded, not ordering a package. There are marvellous opportunities for bands to forgo the record company marketing strategies altogether and sell their own product. |

My feelings on this are mixed. ...*refrains from making the Steven Rothery joke*
![]() I'd do it for the Flower Kings, no problem. Hell, going to the shows is something I do for me, but buying a $20 T-shirt, $15-20 CDs, etc at the show... that's for the band. If they said they needed half a million dollars to finance their next double-album, and I was in a position to, I'd donate $500. ...of course, they're also my favorite band by far... and I've always had great experiences with 'em ![]() ![]() Edited by Man Overboard |

![]() ![]() When I liiick you... IIII will lick yooou... It's been suggested that Mr. Rothery wrote those lyrics in dedication to a particularly delectable bucket of ice cream he saw, and that Mr. Hogarth chose to perform them out of sheer inspiration at Rothery's dedication. ![]() Edited by Man Overboard |

Any action I can take that would result in my favorite prog bands
touring in my area (Wash. D.C.) I would take. The overall sense that
prog rock doesn't sell well in the states permeates the industry, and I
relish the chances I get when a band comes here, I see almost every
prog show here my schedule will allow. Music, however unfortunate, is
now more than ever a business. And the way to tell the industry that
you want to hear a certain kind of music is to vote with your dollars.
That is why I spend all my budget will take on CDs, concert tix, and
paraphenalia (T-shirts, etc...) on bands that I want to hear. The
internet is the best thing to EVER happen to progressive music, because
it allows exposure and discussion of so many great bands that may not
be comercially viable (yet

I spent about $200 on the Rush concert I went to (seats and merchandise) I'd do that with a few of my faves. If I were as big a fan of Marillion as I am now when they last did the internet pre-order I'd do it. I think its a good idea. Marillion is a pretty smart group of guys

I guess Marillion took a risk and it paid off. Good for them. And to answer number 2. Dream Theater. |

Theres a few bands that if they had a call for money id send what i could. GYB!E, a couple of local bands (For The Mathematics for example, local Marsvolta wannabees (pretty good), saw thier album for sale and bought it despite not being all that interested gotta support local acts), The Dears, Porcupine Tree, and some other ones that might need money that I cant think of for some reason.
