hello everyone, i was hoping you could help me discover some new bands with the following particulars, at the moment i'm into bands such as dream theater and symphony x under the technical progressive subgenre, the trouble i am having is that as good as these bands are, the vocals are all similar to the 80's 'man o' war'/'iron maiden' glam rock style singing, i'm sure you are all familiar with this type of singing and to be honest it puts me off the good composing and musicianship of the bands. i enjoy vocals from progressive bands such as tool, marlowe (www.marlowe.co.za) and even thrice, but not as far as opeth and other growling progmetal bands.

please help i know i have been very specific but after numerous requests from friends etc. i have ended up with nothing...

If you're after tech metal, there's a hell of a lot of twisted stuff that's about as far away from traditional '80s metal as it gets.

Firstly Watchtower (OK so they're late '80s and the vocals are high pitched and screechy, but they're still nothing like Manowar ), and Spastic Ink (both of these bands had a Ron Jarzombek on guitar, who does some absolutely crazy tech stuff on his own as well).

Death made a much more important contribution to technical metal than you'd think, particularly in their last four albums (see also Control Denied since you don't like extreme vocals), which brings me along nicely to Atheist and Cynic, both of who've lent members to Death at some time or another and both who did bloody spectacular metal fusion - Atheist leaning towards death metal and Cynic towards heavy thrash, with awful processed vocals on occasion  but still well worth checking out.

In today's scene the most relevant band is probably Spiral Architect, who sound like a more polished mix of Watchtower, Atheist and Fates Warning. Also quite big is Gordian Knot.

However there's a lot of obscure stuff like Dyrhysthmia (I have no idea if I spelt that even vaguely right), Behold... the Arctopus, a group called the ATM project, as well as a fair few more I've forgotten the names of. The last three are all instrumental if I recall correctly.

Then there's a huge load of brutal death metal, but I'm not very knowlegable about that and the vocals would probably put you off. And swathes of "neoclassical shred" which tends to get more generic and dull as the years go on , but I'm sure someone else can help you with that!

Finally, Orthrelm's always worth a laugh, I guess

Welcome to the forum!

Well, you seem to be a little picky when it comes to vocals ... no growling, no screaming. Do you know Pain of Salvation? Daniel Gildenlow is the best Prog Metal singer I know, and his band is one of the best Prog Metal band I know.
