A friend informed me that Jerome posted (via Facebook) Edgar's funeral was yesterday. Per Edgar's wishes, he was buried in an anonymous grave (there is no headstone to mark the gravesite).

Hi, I think that Edgar probably had seen what happened to many "rock stars" out there, to not feel embarassed and not want the commotion for his family and friends ... or something like it. I'm almost wondering if there was an issue with the music scene in Germany that he did not specify or the like ... but it might just be personal and nothing else. Vienna has more history, specially in music ... Germany made a point of destroying their history as much as possible and in fact, Edgar makes a comment about that in that one BBC special ... a new time, a new place, a new person with no past. Only present! (not quoted directly, but very similar). I always thought that those words were not only sensitive, but very special and quite observant. While there is some respect by many folks in Germany, I find it weird that only Manuel Gottsching stood up almost immediately! Which ought to tell you why his music with Ash Ra Tempel and Ashra later, was so nice and valuable for me ... the ability to be HERE AND NOW with the music, regardless of what it was. No fear! i do believe, that in the future, a cultural commission in Germany will deal with this the way they should and move him to aproper facility with the proper attitude and detail. At that time, the family won't say much anymore. It's the end of an era ... the fame and the style, will likely fade away ... it is one of the most loyal and grand of folks and appreciation for this music, but because Edgar owned all of it, the commercial sides, like Virgin and many others, were still punishing Edgar and the band and they will never come to grips with the strength it takes to create the art that they did. This guy is a Michelangelo in music. He is a Da Vinci with his synthesizer work ... and I can only hope that the medium does not die because this is the classical music of the future that academics and universities are not exactly studying and appreciating! Time for me to listen to Manuel and cry over it! |

Klaus Schulze has finally added his kind thoughts:
Even if we have seen us just rarely during the last 45 years - since the days of early Tangerine Dream we went separate ways musically - I still remember old pal Edgar with a friendly, yes: warm-hearted feeling. The last chance encounter was backstage at the Loreley festival during a warm summer night in 2008, where we both had performed, independently.
I also remember some amusing moments, somewhere, at some time in the eighties or nineties, when we smilingly "came to terms" that T.D. will get the America market, and I will get the European :-) Yes, Edgar had also (often a dry) humour. Or, take this, from an interview with Edgar in a German music magazine in 2007: Froese: "Mit Klaus hatte ich sicher seit über zehn Jahren keinen Kontakt mehr, aber vielleicht treffe ich ihn eines Tages im Hospiz, wo wir uns dann die Schnabeltasse an den Kopf werfen und mit unseren Pampers-Einlagen Schlitten fahren wollen." Means: "With Klaus I had no contact for more than ten years, but when we're old one day, maybe I'll meet him in a hospice, where we will throw feeding cups to our heads, and toboggan on our own diapers." Yes, Eddie could be very cheerful, sometimes. We laughed a lot. |
