I know alot of you in fact most of you will probably hate this idea but i think its a good idea because theres alot of good stuff out there thats similar to prog and punk and i think this could be a good chance to let some of the prog people hear some music they would probably never here

bands like Television,Public Image Ltd,Pere Ubu and more

Punk is a genre created to destroy Prog', isn't that enough reason not to include them?

Truly an enlightening statement from the epitome of asininity.

Not ALL punk is THAT bad. I like some Black Flag and Rancid every now and then.

The only "punk" that I can tolerate is The Clash, but the whole idea of progressive punk is horsesh*t.

I like it because it's not just solid punk, it has alot of roots rock influence.

look for a thread i started a couple of weeks ago
called "prog punk - the grey area" or something like
that... there are more bands and names of interest in
there. i wonder why the mighty STRANGLERS get so
little attention on that subject.

I know at least one band for which the label "progressive punk" definitely fits, and that's Inner City Unit.

here a link to their homepage: http://www.innercityunit.com/

Surely you don't mean it was created for that reason. I would say that the success of punk and the fact that the most successful prog bands had long since seen their best days of creativity by, say, 1977 ; those two things marked the death of prog at that time. But to say punk artists started to make punk to destroy prog doesn't make sense.

Punk is a genre that opposes many principle of prog music. Virtuosity, artistry, sophistication - add that to punk music and it's not punk anymore. Therefore a Prog Punk category seems quite useless to me, as there would be no bands to list.

Yes I mean one of their main objectives was to destroy Prog:

Quote Know thine enemy. While Glam at least was proving some light relief from bands who had grown massive like the Stones, Who and Led Zeppelin there were an even more pretentious wave of bands who espoused the view that rock was serious and who were dominating the serious weekly music papers. Prog-Rock was  mostly listened to by grubby polytechnic students who wore flares and dufflecoats and never had any girlfriends and who would sit cross-legged at gigs on the floor bonged out of their brains. They would gather in bedsits drinking coffee out of chipped mugs and ponder the meaning of the universe while listening to Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator, Camel, Gentle Giant, Caravan, Greenslade and a thousand others. These people knew what they wanted ..lots of windswept guitar histrionics, gushing key boards, lyrics full of mystical allusions and song titles bearing no relation to the music and almost as long as the music itself ! As you read these you can see why punk had to happen. Weighed own by the weight of its own pretensions the scene was set for someone to point out that the emperor in fact had no clothes on. Read on and learn the horrible truth..........

http://www.punk77.co.uk/punkhistory/whendinosaursromaedtheea rth.htm

Quote It's the Sex Pistols, after all: The band who saved us back when alternative rock meant "progressive rock," which meant, at best, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. We owe them for that.

Quote Credits

Performer: The Sex Pistols
Producer: Chris Thomas; Bill Price
Distributor: WEA

Artist Overview
Along with the Clash, the Sex Pistols gave birth to the UK punk movement that created a new world order in the European music scene. Inspired by New Yorkers like the Ramones and the New York Dolls, the Pistols crafted a hard-hitting, primal sound whose blazing guitars, nihilistic lyrics, and emphasis on passion/anger over technique brought rise to a musical and cultural revolution in the late 1970s. Though punk wouldn't hit the mainstream in the U.S. until the '90s, the effects of punk and its musical children--post-punk and new wave--were felt worldwide, as the Pistols ran a stake through the heart of the prog-rock and soft-rock sounds that reigned in the mid-'70s.

If you want some more, you'll easily find a picture of Johnny Rotten wearing his I hate Pink Floyd T-Shirt.

Seems it makes clear sense for them.
