    Posted: March 22 2014 at 09:56
Basically, just wanted to see what are the favourite albums with no/very little progressive elements people on PA. Nice to see if there are any trends with what everyone with a prog-biased perspective thinks about specific albums that are completely not prog. I know this definitely shouldn't go under "Prog Polls", but wouldn't fit under any others Ermm

Anyway, here are some of my favourites! Tongue

AC/DC - Back In Black
The Clash - s/t
Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid
Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
The Hoosiers - The Trick To Life
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Sex Pistols - (debut album)

Some that are arguably related to prog would be:

Cream - Disraeli Gears
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Carole King - Tapestry
Lynyrd Skynyrd - all of them! Big smile
Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
Nirvana - Nevermind
The Rolling Stones - too many
Van Halen - s/t,1984

Hopefully you can see what I mean by completely against prog in the first list. Anywho, thanks for any feedback Smile

Why do you think that music that is not Prog is the antithesis of Prog? I admit it's maybe slightly unusual but I adore London Calling and Brain Salad Surgery but don't believe they're mutually exclusive. Not having a go at your poll which is a nice idea but it's just I'm very sensitive to music styles being presented as being either antagonistic or incompatible etc

This thread makes me realize that almost any album that I like is in some way prog related.
Maybe Los Lobos' Kiko, but they were so eclectic that it is almost proggish.
So... I really wouldn't know.

The Stooges' first three albums
Never Mind the Bollocks
all Motorhead's early albums

Also I like some free jazz / improv stuff, but I'm not sure whether that is truly unprogular, as there's some crossover with RIO / avant. Though I reckon it is hard to hear much that is 'prog' in e.g. Coltrane's Ascension, Brotzmann's Machine Gun, Charles Gayle's Touchin' on Trane.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

I really love some driving hard rock/heavy metal, though not too much of it.  Most, if not all of it, would not qualify as even slightly prog related but anyway:

Van Halen - 1984
Dio-Sabbath, especially Dehumanizer
UFO - Lights Out/Strangers in the Night
Scorpions - Virgin Killer
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith (not considering the 70s albums which have at least slight connections to prog)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju (post punk but..)

I read the question as which prog album is the least prog; I'd say Abacab or something (which I like a lot)

Three (relatively) new non-prog all-out rock bands that caught my attention because all three of them have female singers that sound so off the norm great and unusual that they have my full recommendation:

Halestorm
The Pretty Reckless
Maragold

No Nightwish - Within Temptation - Epica - After Forever cheesy pap here!

Far too many to list but I am still a big fan of XTC-  especially Senses, Skylarking, and   Oranges and Lemons,
imho one of the greatest bands ever.

Les Discrets
The Unthanks
Massive Attack
Christian Scott
The Strokes
The National
The Flaming Lips
Smoke Fairies
Dead Weather
Olafur Arnalds
Cannibal Ox
Blue Sky Black Death
God is an Astronaut
Joni Mitchell
And so on...

I've kind of fallen out of love with prog recently, and am transitioning to metal and folk. Agalloch being my gateway band (they're just so good!)

I don't like anything that is truly antithetical to prog. The pop I like is generally highly melodic and has rich chord progressions. I guess I can name some of the more simplistic things I still like though.

Arrival - ABBA
Zenyattŕ Mondatta - The Police
Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks - Brian Eno
Treasure - Cocteau Twins
Violator - Depeche Mode
East of the Sun, West of the Moon - a-ha

Antithetical:  .
directly opposed or contrasted; mutually incompatible.
"people whose religious beliefs are antithetical to mine"
synonyms: (directly) opposed to, contrasting with, contrary to, contradictory to, conflicting with, incompatible with, irreconcilable with, inconsistent with, at variance with, at odds with

Might have been easier to just ask what 'non prog' bands we liked.
