I made up a fake band years ago called The Speed Lip Readers, and wrote several albums' worth of lyrics for non-existent songs.  Recently, I used one of these songs to make a real song with my real band.  The Speed Lip Readers were comprised of me and a bunch of other people on this other forum I used to frequent.  The rest of the forum played along nicely, and two of them who got together offline to collaborate on a fake song together ended up falling in love and getting married.

Still, I'll go with the Rutles, with honorable mention going to Bad News.
