It is supposed to be a major international multi-sport event, however it may turn into a political farce. Not because of the Russians of course. I think it's a shame that the Western leaders make such a political circus around the Olympic games. And it's not for the first time. Remember China?

Nil novum sub sole. The olympic games have been abused for political purposes for decades. Good old Theodosius did the right thing when he abolished these games for some 1500 years
 .

The truly important sports event of the year starts in June.
 I've never cared for the Olympics and less so for the winter ones. But the fact that they are held so close to Stalin's old resort and rest house make this ones more interesting. If only because I just read a gigantic book about him where the word Sochi was mentioned a million times

I always seem to enjoy watching the Olympics, but aside from hockey it is the only time that I watch the majority of these sports/competitions. I always have a hard time with the ones that are decided by judges. As a casual observer the scores and ratings always seem to be quite arbitrary to fit the results as they are predetermined prior to the Olympics. I'm not the most patriotic of people, but I guess that I do tend to feel a bit of national pride watching these competitions. I can't say that I particularly care one way or another about the politics that surround the games. To me it is really just about the athletes and the sports.

The one and only Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the only competitor in the ski jumping from dear old Blighty. A legend in his own lunchbox, he was utterly hapless, but the British media and public loved him and he had a good bout of celeb status.

That should not be surprising since Uncle Joe was from that neck of the woods , in neighboring Georgia! (He is still worshiped there, sadly!). The good thing about Olympics is that its the only 'peaceful' multi-national interface where there are no casualties , no collateral damage , no nukes , no bloodshed. Its still a better alternative than war!
