Topic: Movie poll (without the classic Batman Forever) Posted: December 06 2013 at 10:57 |
Simple poll really. 15 films I really enjoy - some of em I even consider to be genuine masterpieces.
I left out my beloved Stanley Kubrick, but time has shown again and again that prog fans simply can't resist this man. This one makes for a more even playing field methinks

Cidade de Deus, or City of God, is without a doubt one of the finest modern gangster movies. People who think Boyz in da Hood is raw and tough, you ain't seen nothing yet - and this is based on a true story.
Once you catch this one, I promise you you'll never forget the terrifying image of this little boy:

I have seen 7 on this list. Torn between Citate de Deus, The Mission or Missing. For pure filmmaking, the Brazilian. But in general letting subjectivity win, and for its great music, The Mission.

Love The Mission. Joffé and Morricone teaming up could never go wrong.
This one also captures Robert de Niro in one of his strongest roles ever, and to think most people tend to overlook it. Such a shame. The scenes where he is slowly coming to terms with the act of having killed his own brother, are just brutal and beautiful all at once. I've never seen De Niro show the same array of emotions - he is exhilarated, lost, happy, sad and in deep mourning - and he manages to portray all of these feelings in a single scene. Sheer genius. Jeremy Irons isn't half bad as the missionary priest either

Pan's Labyrinth Haven't seen all of these but its one of my favourite films. I love the mix of fantasy and reality. And the way that the real monsters are the real ones. It's a classic.

Nice to see Pan's Labyrinth getting some love. Wonderful movie where surreal fairytale meets the reality of the Spanish civil war. I find it utterly beautiful - the way it was directed, shot and all the weird costumes and bizarre frightening characters that Del Torro dreamed up all by himself.
.....and then to think he was the man behind Blade ll Truly boggles the mind.

Oh yeah Ole!!! My dad's name is Ole, so bear with me....
Fantastic movie, maybe not his best work, but I picked it because i thought more people would know it. Rather surprised to see that you've been the only poster mentioning it.

Interesting choice of films. I've seen only five out of these. Out of those five I loved The Mission.
(Since I'm a bit of a Scott Walker fan, I'm planning to see The Seventh Seal some time soon.)

I'll vote for Det sjunde inseglet, but I also like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Pan's Labyrinth and Amélie.
