prog labels!!

According to you which labels had a huge influence in the promotion of the so called prog rock scene?

For me it's maybe Virgin (at their beginning) and Brain...

How about Harvest (BJH, Floyd, etc.), Manticore (bit obvious I suppose), Island (remember "Bumpers"?). Credit also to the major labels (Atlantic, Deram/Decca etc.) who used to be far more adventurous than they are now.

In more recent times, Inside Out & Verglas.

One way records : they reissued lots of prog records, in various subgenres : fusion with David Sancious, metal-prog with Dream Theater (When dream and day unite), Canterbury (Soft Machine) and many others.

Wounded bird records : another label that reissued many fusion or prog artists, including Steve Walsh, Lenny White, Jan Hammer, Steve Morse Band.

Inside Out : the current leading metal-prog label in Europe.

In the early days of  prog and related rock in the UK, we looked to the following labels:

Island Records - Renaissance, Krimson, Quintessence, (Traffic), Fairport Convention

Decca/Deram: Genesis, Moody Blues, Camel, 'Igginbottom Wrench, Caravan

CBS: United States Of America, (brass rock of BST and Chicago), Black Widow, Soft Machine

Verve: Velvet Underground, Ultimate Spinach, the early Mothers????, Caravan (home of 60's avante rock)

Vertigo: Keith Tippett, Magna Carta

EMI/Harvest: Floyd, Kevin Ayers, Edgar Broughton Band, Quatermass, BJH, even Deep Purple (what is Concert for Rock Group and Orchestra if not prog rock?)

(Harvest spin out of EMI and Parlophone signe dgroups)

RCA: Jefferson Airplane

RCA/Neon: Tonton Macoute, Centipede

Charisma: Nice, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, String Driven Thing, Atomic Rooster

Polydor: Blind Faith, Jack Bruce, Pink Fairies

Atlantic: Yes, LZ, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge

Liberty: ?????????????

(The US label ABC Records, must have sold a lot of Soft Machine and Soft Machine Volume 2 as imports into the UK)

thanks for your answers guys...today I think that independant & small labels success to raise from the dead many obscure prog bands...I think of Spalax, garden of delights, Cleopatra (hypnotic section), Captain trip and many others.

The only bands I can remember on Liberty were Creedence Clearwater Revivial and Canned Heat, both good (but quite different) rock bands. I think I've also got a single by the Fifth Dimension on the same label, "Wedding Bell Blues" maybe, but now I really am digressing!

It's interesting how the generally accepted definition of prog has changed over the years, as you say Dick, The Groundhogs and Canned Heat were considered progressive at that time. I wasn't a great fan of the Groundhogs, but "Split" was a classic, "Cherry Red" and all that!

Interesting that you were talking to TMcP, I often wonder how many "stars" of the 70's I've passed in the street, and not recognised. When you see Dave Gilmour these days, he looks like a retired bank manager, not the long haired, bearded rock musician of "Meddle".

CCR were a great band, I still play "Ramble tamble" from the same album "Cosmo's factory" on regular occasions (weddings, parties, anything!).

Paatos is also on that label.. that band should be loved by everyone! it hasn't anything to do with metal at all..
