Since my original thread is long forgotten and there's no admin around to reopen it...

Let's give it another try! Smile

"False friends" are words in different languages that sound alike but have totally different meanings.

And another funny Polish - English example for a start: "fart' in Polish means "fluke" or "lucky stroke"!
"Music is much like f**king, but some composers can't climax and others climax too often, leaving themselves and the listener jaded and spent."

Rust. In Dutch it means 'Rest'. But, in case of the Iron Lady, we can combine these meanings a bit and say: Rust in Peace.

And to continue with prime ministers: "Tusk" is the English word for a large curved tooth but in Polish it is the surname of the prime minister .

Rood in English means cross or crucifix, the name Scotish Parliament building is derived from this meaning - Holyrood == Holy Cross.

In Dutch it means the colour red.
What?

Another example just came to my mind: "fagot" in Polish (and similarly in German: "Fagott") means "bassoon", in English "f a g g o t" has a... different meaning...

"Fart" means "speed" in Norwegian. And "smell" means "bang" (noun).
