So we got Sirius satellite radio installed with our new car. I've gradually come to love it more and more. Case in point... last night on a station called "The Vault", I heard "In the Cage" from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, immediately followed by some ELP song I'd never heard (which thoroughly impressed me btw - even though I've never been a huge ELP fan).

Another song came on that I wasn't diggin as much so I switched to another station called "Hard Attack", and was thrilled to hear "Aftermath" by Strapping Young Lad.

None of this would you EVER hear on "terrestrial" radio.

Am I getting too starry eyed about the possibilities here

I have heard prog on Sirius as well.  on the "classic vinyl" station I heard 'lamb lies down' as well as several early Yes songs, ELP and procol harum in one weekend road trip.  I briefly listened to a supposed jam/prog station on XM radio, but it mostly turned out to be string cheese incident type stuff.  Due to the variety of specialized satellite stations, you are definitely more likely to hear a prog song from prog's popular era, but the same is true of hearing Rush or Yes on any classic rock 'terrestrial' station.

Hmm.. not sure what you mean by DAB...

Oh, and I also forgot to mention that on another occasion the same station played an absolutely SICK live version of "The Gates of Delerium" that I'd never heard. That pretty much sealed the deal for me.

Ah, OK - just looked up DAB. From what I can tell, DAB is essentially the digitizing of standard "terrestrial" radio broadcasts, in order to improve fidelity.

Satellite radio is also transmitted digitally, but not over the existing ground-based network. It's actually transmitted via a series of satellites in orbit. You need a special receiver in order to pick up the signal.

Well no... Certainly in the UK DAB radio needs a specific (and more expensive) kind of reciever and has many exclusive stations.

on the XM jamband/prog station, I've actually heard some pretty good stuff, like the Ummagumma version of Careful With that Axe, Eugene, some Spock's Beard, In The Wake Of Poseidon, and Industry (KC, from three of a perfect pair)

Until they start playing new prog as well as classic prog I am not going to get excited.  If there were a station that devoted themselves to exposing new prog that would be fantastic.  But neither format seems to be interested in it. XM tried but I guess ratings are not good and shelved the Prog station to the internet only drawer. Sirius does not have a prog station at all.  
 
TP- Satellite is a subscription based radio system.  You have to purchase a radio to receive the signal and pay a monthly subscription cost.

I actually thought they had apretty good mix. But any prog is better than no prog!
