I think the bigger story is that after 40 years, they've finally revealed their identities. I was surprised to learn the singer's name was Randy Rose, I always thought it was Hardy Fox (supposedly one of the band's managers, but who i also thought was in the band too.)

^It actually doesLOL

"In typical Residents fashion, the "box" is in fact a 28 cubic-foot refrigerator that comes stocked with first pressings of what appears to be every single Residents release ever - more than 100 items - including an actual eyeball-with-top-hat mask which you may recognize from their pioneerings pre-MTV music videos"

How do we know his name is really Randy Rose?  He goes out of the way to repeatedly say that that's his name.

His name has also been definitively identified as Homer Flynn. Just when you think you know 'em...

IDK, many insanely rich people collect things because they can. If you are on a $40k/year salary a walk-in humidor or a 1906 Honus Wagner would be insanely stupid.

I may be wrong, but wasn't the whole story some kind of big prank?

I don't think so.  It says this on their site:

While the UBS is priced well beyond the reach of most consumers, it should be noted that the intended market for the box set lies within the realm of fine art. Indeed, most people are unaware of The Residents' renown in the world of museums and art galleries, but considering their current installation at the Shanghai Bienalle, as well as their many exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and performances at the Pompidou Center in Paris, Lincoln Center in NYC and the Chicago Institute of Contemporary Art among others, The Residents' reputation in the art world is undeniable. Only ten of these sets will be created and It is expected that most will be sold to various museums around the world, but serious collectors are also encouraged to inquire.

Perhaps a better word would be ludicrous.
