Topic: The Hunger Games vs Bttle Royale (films only) Posted: November 22 2012 at 08:21 |
I watched The Hungar Games for the first time last night and quite enjoyed it, but I was barely half an hour in before I was thinking that Koushun Takami should be getting some serious royalties for this, it's very close to being a direct lift.
As much as I loved the Battle Royale film, along with Ring it was one of the two films that got me into Asian cinima, I definitely see it as being underdeveloped these days, with too much emphasis put on the students killing each other, though I think it dealt with the kids killing each other concept better. Overall though The Hunger Games is a better film with a more cohesivea dn developed story, though being the first part of a trliogy it doesnt need to look too much at the social background to the games, something BR glossed over.
I havent read the Suzanne Collins books, but I suspect Takami's would win out there easily, I adore that book.

I'm not a big fan of either, but this girl helped give Battle Royale an edge. I also think I like the book more, but I never finished Hunger Games.

Havn't seen, or read, either but with what I've heard (and OP verifies)...might as well give it to the original right?

Sadly to me `Battle Royale' was a totally soulless vile film with no depth whatsoever. Don't get me started on the overly tragic classical musical score that's meant to give it more sophistication either!
`Hunger Games' was probably better for me, but the problem was I wanted to know more about the society, the class systems, etc, and none of that was approached with any depth either!
Sigh....maybe the books would explain a bit more?
