 Topic: Fans of Pierre Moerlen's Gong?

thanks to almighty Tortoise, i picked up on and developed quite an obsession for PMG.......i think i have now practically everything. i simply cant get enuff of those double vibraphone/xylophone/marimba sounds in a rock fusion context can you? My fav albums are Leave It Open and Second wind, am trying to get my hands on a copy of Breakthrough and the very last one from 2004 released on Musea................

Zoviet, I really love those mid 70's onwards Gong albums! I actually prefer the PMG album `Gazeusse!' (bit of a favourite of mine, I play that at work all the time!) to `Shamal', while `Expresso II', `Downwind' and `Time Is The Key' all have great stuff on them too! I guess the PMG stuff is a little dismissed because of how loved the `Allen/Gnome' stuff is?
Heh, you've inspired me to go and dig `Downwind' and `Time...' off the shelf and give them a fresh listen!

My intro into Gongworld was Time Is The Key and Expresso. Made me all go gazuese  . The Daevid Allen and Gilli stuff is a lot of fun, too, the transitional Shamal, the non transitional You. A lot of fun in all their incarnations. The spinoffs like Gongzilla. The last thing Moerlin did with the Russians. A world of great music all around.

yeah guys go fer it hahah! i treat PMG as a totally seperate thing from Gong but yes Shamal is a transitional work, and i have that too. AND dont fergit to check out Tortoise gahahagahagaha

I believe Expresso (the American release of Gazeuse) was the first Gong of any sort I heard, and I thought it was amazing. I also have Downwind and Time is the Key, both of which are good, but I don't listen to them as much.
One of my first acts of music journalism (snicker) was interviewing Moerlen over the phone. That was scary, I was like crazy nervous.

Indeed, I love the way that all forms of GonG are accepted as Gong by everyone involved and that it doesn't automatically mean a law suit. Cool!

Never had the chance to hear Gongzilla. I should check to see if someone posted it on Y.T. I love P.M.G. I have many titles. I have been trying for years to locate the original cd release of Paragong which was actually a live concert. I saw it listed on E-bay and I am not personally fond on doing bids. Has anyone heard it? Interestingly enough another obscure mystery is contained on Brand X..Manifest Destiny. The version I have of this cd does not list the last 2 tracks ..which! according to many Gong freaks are 2 tracks taken from a concert of Brand X featuring Pierre Moerlen on drums. Someone e-mailed me and told me that on their version Moerlen is officially credited. It's just completely outstanding drum work. I also love his work with Mike Oldfield! I love his drum solo on the "Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls Dancehall". Pierre Moerlen's Gong is the ultimate though and I love every release. Every record ever recorded! We drive a truck to your house! I read about his death in the far away back pages of a famous drummer's magazine. He should have been chosen for the front cover and I thought that was quite ignorant.

yeah if you want more mallet fests you have especially go for TNT, Standards and It's All Around You, which cover the most fusion-ish end of Tortoise's sound............

Gongzilla was a great discovery for me, Gong meets metal a little. And the Gong/Gongzilla guys have played with Happy Rhodes...
