I'm pretty new to the genre but I would like to explore it. Can you recommend me some good old school instrumental funky stuff, maybe with some progness on it? Here you have an example, it's a soundtrack from a videogame that I enjoyed a lot:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE1gTYd9EDc
Hope you can help me Wink

Herbie Hancock is the best place to start. His two major funk albums are Head Hunters and Thrust.

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters, Thrust, Man-Child, Flood, Secrets
The J.B.'s - Anthology (I think their albums are out of print, so the Anthology collection is the one to get; it's great)

I can't think of any more that's purely instrumental 70s funk right now. I'll come back if I think of more.

Also, check out the band Lettuce. They are a 2000s band, but they're just what you're looking for, just a modern version of it. All 3 of their studio albums are excellent, as is their live album.

Certainly Herbie Hancock comes to mind, and if you're ok with some modern stuff you should check out Dreadnaught - The American Standard, it's rocky, progressive with a lot of funky playing.

Oh...and of course Primus have a lot of funky stuff too.

Primus is more strange/quirky/weird than funky, though.

Afroskull. These guys kick some serious ass. They're not from the seventies, but you will surely enjoy them.

Funkadelic! You need this psychedelic funk classic in your life. Although they're not instrumental only, the magnificent title track is.

^ Might as well throw in Parliament while you're at it.

I think there's a lot more funk from the 70s with vocals, and more instrumental funk from the 80s and beyond.

But....

Going back to the original topic of INSTRUMENTAL 70s funk... Here's two more.

Billy Cobham
Maceo Parker

Tower Of Power
sometimes had instrumental funk tunes, as did James Brown's albums, but usually the instrumentals were performed by The J.B.'s. I think Sly & The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield and The Meters also had an instrumental or two.

Also, check out Johnny "Guitar" Watson.

Instrumental funk from the 90s/2000s

Lettuce
Soulive
The Greyboy Allstars
Orgone
Galactic (earlier albums especially)
New Jersey Kings
The Poets Of Rhythm
Stanton Moore
Time-Lapse Consortium

Hell yes. And also you might want to check Liquid Soul's first three albums, if tou don't mind your funk more eclectic and jazzier than usual.

I first thought of Funkadelic too, though not the track Maggot Brain.  I was thinking more of this little b-side:

^ Please don't do that. Just post the link. I hate when there's too many videos on a thread page, load time takes forever.

Astro Can CaravanHeadbanger
Finnish big band playing psychedelic funky fusion highly reminiscent of Sun Ra and Guru Guru even if that sounds pretty weird. Funky in a different way.
